ARMA Honors Three Projects as Premier Asphalt Roofing Installations in North America

ARMA awards
March 27, 2017 at 3:59 a.m.

Awards program receives record number of project submissions, from large commercial installations to beautiful residential roofs.

Three projects from across the United States have been recognized as the top asphalt roofing installations by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA). ARMA’s annual Quality Asphalt Roofing Case-Study (QARC) Awards Program seeks out contractors who choose asphalt roofing and install beautiful and high-performing systems. This year, a stunning home in North Carolina, a commercial building in Florida and a firehouse in Washington State have been chosen as QARC Award winners.

Chapel Hill Roofing Company received the Gold QARC Award for its residential project titled The Triangle Home. The North Carolina-based contractor installed a full asphalt roofing system to fit the home’s complex architecture and the homeowner’s desire for a range of color options, protection from the elements and algae resistance, at an affordable price.

The Silver Award was given to Advanced Roofing Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the second year in a row. Its completion of a 49,955-square-foot roof on the Broward County Addiction Recovery Center’s Stephen R. Booher Building impressed judges with its intricacy. The new high-performance roof system provides weatherproof protection for the building’s residents.

Cascade Roofing Company of Burlington, Washington, was honored with the Bronze QARC Award for its steep-slope installation on the Burlington Fire Department firehouse. The building needed a new roof, and required a product that had visual appeal, wind resistance and algae resistance. Cascade Roofing installed a full asphalt roofing system, including a synthetic underlayment and an ice and water shield on the leading edges.

ARMA received a record 40 submissions this year. These projects demonstrated the range of colors and designs that asphalt roofing can achieve, its ability to meet challenging project requirements and to provide reliability in tough climates. Each year, these projects are judged by a panel of roofing industry experts from trade associations, architecture firms and the media. They score projects based on their use of asphalt roofing technology to provide curb appeal, durability and value.

“As the QARC Awards Program has expanded over the last seven years, it has grown increasingly challenging for our judges to choose from the numerous excellent projects we receive,” said Reed Hitchcock, executive vice president of ARMA. “This year, it came down to identifying which projects demonstrated how contractors use asphalt roofing to solve key challenges for building owners and to provide peace of mind with a protective roof system.”

The 2017 QARC recipients are:

Gold Contractor: Chapel Hill Roofing Company; Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Project Name: The Triangle Home

Project Description: This residential roof included a CertainTeed Integrity Roof System™, which consisted of Landmark® shingles in the color Pewter; WinterGuard® ice and water barrier; DiamondDeck® underlayment; SwiftStart® starter shingles; CertainTeed Ridge Vent; and Shadow Ridge® accessory shingles on the hips and ridges. The complexity of the roof made for a challenging installation, as there were many different roof slopes and 11 skylights that had to be replaced.

Silver Contractor: Advanced Roofing, Inc.; Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Project Name: Broward County Addiction Recovery Center’s Stephen R. Booher Building

Project Description: A Johns Manville SBS modified bitumen membrane, DynaLastic® 180 S, was selected as the base sheet. The base sheet was mechanically fastened and the laps were heat welded. All subsequent layers—the DynaWeld™ Base sheet and DynaWeld™ Cap FR CR — were also heat welded. In areas with low flashings, JM PermaFlash® was utilized to terminate the roof system.

Bronze Contractor: Cascade Roofing Company; Burlington, Washington

Project Name: Burlington Fire Department

Project Description: Cascade Roofing installed a full asphalt roofing system, including a synthetic underlayment, an ice and water shield on the leading edges and the PABCO® Roofing's Paramount® Signature Cut Shingle in Oakwood. This shingle provided the look that the design team wanted while also offering algae resistance, superior seal-down and protection from the elements.
