By Colin Sheehan, RCS Reporter.

Hear what Scott Wadsworth of Essential Craftsman had to say about TAMKO Heritage® Premium shingles.

From clay and wood to metal and stone, roofing materials have varied in popularity and usage throughout all of human history. It is without a doubt that asphalt shingles have established themselves as the most popular residential roofing material used in the United States. Asphalt shingles provide lasting protection and are “the all-around winner” in Scott Wadsworth’s perspective, host and creator of popular YouTube channel Essential Craftsman.

The recent episode, “The Incredible Asphalt Shingle,” provides viewers with Scott Wadsworth’s analysis of the TAMKO Heritage® Premium shingles that  were installed on his Essential Craftsman spec house project in Oregon.

TAMKO provided the roofing materials for Essential Craftsman and has been featured in three consecutive videos on the channel. These three videos depict the complete process of roofing, from acquiring the product to the installation.

More than ten tons of the premium shingles were installed onto the spec house project. In “The Incredible Asphalt Shingle,” host Scott recapped the process and went in depth about the shingle itself, and why it was superior, in his opinion.

The shingle is created through infusing fiberglass with asphalt, followed by the addition of granules that provide the shingle with a surface that helps to resist both ultraviolet radiation and surface abrasions.

Another important quality of the TAMKO shingles are the strip of adhesive located at the bottom edge of every shingle. This strip of adhesive welds itself to the laminated lower course as the roof is built layer by layer.

“This combination of nails and adhesives makes this a bulletproof membrane that adheres to every irregularity of your roof when they’re installed correctly,” Scott said in the episode. “I think [the Heritage Premium shingle is] the pinnacle of asphalt shingle technology and I for one can’t imagine how it could ever be improved.”

Essential Craftsman started as a personal project for Scott Wadsworth, who believed in passing on the trades that have been learned and mastered for a millennium by human beings. Wadsworth and his son intend to improve the world through craftsmanship which, like music or art, can reach through borders. You can watch more Essential Craftsman videos on their YouTube channel.
