Managing Roofing Risks: Air and Vapor Control

Every year, contractors install millions of square feet of commercial roofing for both new construction and re-roofing projects. Traditionally, low-slope roofing systems have prioritized vapor restriction over air tightness. In this newly accredited AIA presentation, we will delve into the advancements in air barrier technology and permeable vapor retarder membranes, and their influence on building performance.

This webinar aims to equip you with the insights needed to make informed choices between air/vapor barriers and permeable vapor retarders for low-slope roofing, enhancing your proficiency in creating resilient and sustainable building envelopes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize when, where, and why to use an air barrier vs. vapor barrier vs. vapor permeable retarder in low-slope roofing applications.

  2. Describe the technology changes of low-slope roofing systems over time and their importance to building performance.

  3. Gain clarity on how building science fundamentals, specifically heat, air, and moisture management, influence both energy efficiency and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  4. Identify how to mitigate common issues from moisture and air movement that impact occupant’s health and safety.

SlopeShield Plus Self-Adhered

  • SlopeShield Plus SA can be installed on:
    • Roof applications with a minimum slope of 1/4: 12 in both commercial and residential applications
    • Mass timber roof deck/floor deck as the structure is erected
  • Self-drying technology facilitates damp substrate (insulation, concrete, wood, etc.) drying, allowing for component reuse in reroof applications
  • Fully self-adhered, aggressive, patented, pressure-sensitive adhesive is protected by a siliconized release film, which is removed during installation
  • Exceptional air barrier and permeable vapor retarder, curbs air leakage and manage moisture within the building envelope
  • Transitions to an air barrier and permeable vapor retarder within the finished roof assembly, greatly reducing condensation
  • Code compliant, engineered to meet/exceed standards set forth in IECC and IBC.
  • 6 months of UV and climate exposure prior to roof system installation
  • Tough, durable, and Slip Resistant - With Excellent Traction for Installers
  • Primerless application
  • Suitable for All Climates and Geographic Locations, Including Extreme Temperature Areas
  • 20-Year Material Warranty

Reroof With Self-Drying Technology

A typical low slope roof consists of a roof covering, insulation layer, and structural deck leading to trapped moisture within the roof assembly. Conventional roofing practices call for the removal of the entire roof assembly which leads to disruptions for occupants and increased overall cost.

1. Tear off aged roof covering.
2. Install SlopeShield Plus SA allowing damp substrates to dry.
3. Work continues on reroofing with robust weather protection installed.
4. Building remains occupied.
5. Install new insulation layer and roof covering.
