When moisture goes unchecked in a building, it can cause a number of problems including poor air quality, mold, compromised roof systems and damaged structural integrity. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Megan Ellsworth spoke with Chris Meyer, director of low-slope roofing at VaproShield, about their product that combats condensation and moisture in a roofing assembly to prevent these issues from happening in the first place.
SlopeShield Plus, according to Chris, is the only product currently in the commercial roofing market made to fully address these problems. “If you look at the technical world, they love to separate air barrier and vapor retarder, which basically is the control of your two different vehicles of moisture. Air, which acts more as a fire hose. It moves a lot of moisture very, very quickly,” Chris explained. “And then what we've really been focused on for the past 34 years is vapor diffusion, which acts more like a sponge. The moisture will diffuse, but it happens very, very slowly. For moisture control, it's the right control of both of these different mechanisms for the roof.”
While previous products were overusing vapor barriers, SlopeShield Plus navigates the challenge of giving moisture control without full vapor restriction.
Performance-oriented roofers should include this in their projects for several reasons. First, it helps contractors dry a building quickly while saving on time and labor costs.
“It’s a very rapid install process, and it gets your customer in the dry. With the 180-day exposure, you can get a customer in the dry and then come back if you have multiple projects and a limited number of workers to do it,” Chris stated. “And especially as we're coming into the constraints around labor force, most of the time this product doesn't require a primer. So, you have labor and cost savings.”
In addition, SlopeShield Plus can be a key selling point to customers in optimizing energy efficiency and avoiding future damage or maintenance costs.
“It's an added layer of protection and peace of mind that you're not going to experience premature roof failure,” Chris shared. “Part of the value proposition is, a membrane is less than a dollar, and it's the primary layer of defense of everything. You're protecting your investment.”
