Raising the bar for fire safety

Raising the bar for fire safety
August 28, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

VaproShield products pass the industry’s most rigorous fire safety test, giving contractors and building owners greater peace of mind.

When it comes to fire safety in commercial roofing, meeting code is essential, but you want materials and systems that go above and beyond. VaproShield® recently passed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 276 calorimeter test, one of the most stringent internal fire performance tests in the industry. We recently sat down with Chris Meyer, director of low-slope roofing for VaproShield, to discuss the significance of this testing and how it can help you in the field.

Why the calorimeter test matters

Chris explained how the calorimeter test came about: “In the 1950s, there was a huge fire at the GM transmission plant in Livonia, Michigan. The roof was built exceptionally well – multiple plies of BUR, plus layers of perlite insulation. But when a fire broke out during welding near some flammable liquid, the whole building burned down in about 30 minutes.”

That fire led to the creation of the original safety test by Factory Mutual (FM), which evolved into today’s FM 4450 standard, and later, the NFPA 276 standard. Unlike other fire tests, such as UL 1256, which burns at around 5,000 BTUs per minute using natural gas, the NFPA 276 test is far more extreme. It uses heptane and propane to generate over 26,000 BTUs per minute, simulating a true internal fire scenario and testing how much fuel a roof system contributes to the fire.

What this means for building assemblies

One of the biggest reasons passing this test is significant for VaproShield is that their fire-rated vapor barrier can be applied directly to a steel deck without the need for a thermal barrier. Chris shared, “You’re removing roughly $0.88 per square foot in material costs by eliminating the thermal barrier layer. Plus, you’re cutting fasteners, plates and the labor that comes with installing them.”

Fewer layers also mean fewer points of failure. Many fire-rated assemblies fail when fasteners pull through the thermal barrier. With this simplified system, contractors can deliver a Class A fire-rated assembly with less risk, faster installation and significant savings.

What this means for contractors

VaproShield’s achievement delivers peace of mind in multiple ways:

  • Compliance made easier: Knowing VaproShield’s products meet NFPA 276 gives you peace of mind that your project will meet the most stringent fire standards.
  • Broader system flexibility: VaproShield is the first independent manufacturer to pass this test. That means no restrictive partnerships – you can use it with the roof cover systems you already install.
  • Jobsite savings: Cutting unnecessary layers means faster installation, reduced labor costs and fewer call-backs due to failure points.
  • Gold standard performance: According to Chris, while FM Global only insures a small percentage of buildings (about 5-10%), their standards are used in the design and specification of 60-70% of commercial roofing projects. That means passing this test positions VaproShield’s products to meet the requirements on a majority of high-profile or tightly specified jobs, giving you a competitive advantage when bidding or working on those projects.

This new rating for VaproShield products brings top-tier fire protection, streamlined installation and cost savings to help you meet and exceed building standards safely, efficiently and affordably.
