The composite advantage

The composite advantage
June 21, 2026 at 12:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Inside Tapco’s roofing systems and their performance advantages.

In a new episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth got the chance to talk to Mike Winter from Tapco Roofing Products about how their tile and shake products offer the perfect combination of aesthetics and durability. Tapco’s products are synthetic composites. Mike shared, “It's made from virgin limestone and polypropylene, which creates a stunning synthetic product that looks natural but has performance benefits like being lightweight.”

Being lightweight means that not only is the weight strain on a building’s structure lessened in comparison to traditional tiles, but also that it is easier to transport and install. Mike explained, “As soon as it lands on the job site it can be in straight away. There's no starting or anything like that, the contractor is good to go. So that's a big part of making the job easier.”

And being lightweight is just one of many benefits that come with Tapco composite products. Mike shared some more, “It being a composite product allows us to control all parts of manufacturing and engineer it for peak performance. For example, we test it against fire, wind driven rain and moisture absorption and our testing house partners say that it was the best-performing when compared to similar products.”

The result is a highly durable product that can withstand whatever is thrown at it. Mike gave an example, “We've done installs on things like golf courses and cricket grounds, places where there might be balls flying around that could crack traditional tile. But with our products, it’s so robust you don’t get any of that. It stays strong even with balls hitting it.”

At the end of the day, all of these benefits make Tapco’s products a great option for both contractors and their clients. For the contractors, they can keep their operation costs lower thanks to the improved handleability of the composite products. And for the clients, they can save money in the long run as Tapco’s products require less maintenance and stand up to the elements better than competing products.
