In a new RoofersCoffeeShop® Lunch & Learn, Megan Ellsworth hosts Jeffrey Job, Johns Manville’s polyiso product manager, for a conversation about the fundamentals of adhesives in commercial roofing systems. Jeffrey opened the conversation by highlighting the many different types of adhesives available, sharing, “Johns Manville has a very broad portfolio of products ranging on the membrane side, everything from your classic single-plies that are very popular today to some of the more traditional built up and asphaltic systems as well. And with each of these different membrane types, there’s different adhesives needed for them.”
In total, Johns Manville carries almost two dozen adhesives that offer different qualities to a roofing system and work with different types of membranes. Jeffrey explained, “There's probably five or six different adhesives that work specifically with each of the different membranes we offer. So whether it be bonding adhesives that are specific to a membrane or a two-part urethane that can be used on different types of membranes, both cold and hot applied, there’s something for every project.”

To help contractors figure out what the best adhesive is for their project, Johns Manville has created a Selector Guide for their adhesives. Jeffrey added some context to how to read this resource, saying, “This resource is available on our website and walks you through a list of different types of adhesives, the specific details about them that makes them different from one another and then the various membranes that they apply to.”
So, if you were to tackle a project that had specific needs, say a hospital or area with sensitive occupants, not only would you be able to use this chart to see what products in the Johns Manville portfolio would work with your membrane, you would be able to look for qualities like low-VOC or water-based that would work with the goals of the project. Jeffrey summed it up, saying, “Here at Johns Manville, we are trying to have a lot of variety and versatility for whatever the client or customer might need. Having that availability is great, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times. That’s why we have all kinds of resources and documentation on our website, a bunch of different installation videos, one-pagers about specific products, for example. And we also encourage our contractors to reach out to their local rep if they want to have additional conversations on a specific product.”
