H.B. Fuller adhesive innovations are helping contractors maintain productivity and quality despite ongoing labor constraints.

In a time when global workforce constraints are shaping roofing and construction projects, contractors are facing an increasing need to deliver high volumes of work with smaller crews and tighter schedules. Meeting these demands requires not only skilled labor, but also smarter systems that can offset the reduced manpower while maintaining quality across jobsite conditions.

Innovations in adhesive technology are playing a critical role in helping contractors adapt. H.B. Fuller is advancing spray applied canister adhesive solutions designed to streamline installation, reduce physical strain and improve overall jobsite efficiency. By focusing on ease of use, speed and consistent performance, these systems support contractors navigating labor shortages while maintaining high standards of craftsmanship.

The challenge: Doing more with smaller crews

The building industry continues to face persistent labor shortages, with roofing among the hardest hit trades. Crews must complete the same — or greater — project volume with fewer workers, making installation speed and ease critical factors for success. Every hour saved on a job site can mean the difference between meeting deadlines and avoiding costly delays. And considering labor scarcity as one of the top megatrends shaping roofing practices, demand for safer installation methods, simplified workflows and reduced physical strain come into play.

Where spray applied canister adhesives change the game

Spray applied canister adhesives significantly reduce the labor required per square foot installed compared to traditional dip and roll adhesives, whilst still giving the same great bonding performance. How? Let’s break it down for you:

1 - Faster installs that multiply crew productivity

In an industry where timelines matter more than ever, installation speed is becoming a critical performance metric that influences overall project success. Independent time trials and application comparisons show spray applied systems can complete membrane installation 3.5–4 times faster than dip and roll adhesives*. This is driven by much shorter flash times — about 5–8 minutes for spray adhesives versus 15–30 minutes for pail adhesives*.

On a real roof, this translates into:

More squares installed per day

Fewer weather-related delays

More projects completed in a season

For a contractor facing labor shortages, multiplying output without adding headcount is a direct business advantage.

2 - Reduced labor effort and increased safety

Spray canister systems weigh far less than traditional setups and eliminate the need for continuous bending, rolling and pushing large equipment. They use ergonomic spray applicators, reducing physical strain and improving jobsite safety — critical when experienced labor is scarce.

3 - Consistent, high-quality application

Maintaining installation quality is harder with inexperienced crews. Spray adhesives help bridge the skills gap by delivering:

Precise uniform spray patterns

Predictable coverage rates (800–1,000 square feet per canister versus 225–300 square feet per pail*)

Reduced variability between installers

This consistency supports better long-term roof performance while helping crews get up to speed quickly.

4 - Lower jobsite overhead and streamlined logistics

Spray adhesive systems require fewer material changeouts and significantly less storage space. On a 10,000 square feet project, contractors need around 10 canisters versus 40 pails* — a substantial reduction in handling time, staging space and jobsite clutter.

Fewer interruptions equal smoother workflow, which is essential for small crews.

5 - All season flexibility to maximize working days

Spray applied adhesives designed for EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) and TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) single-ply membranes can be applied in temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C), giving contractors more workable days during cold months. By providing an alternative to mechanical fasteners, they also prevent thermal bridging, improving energy efficiency and building performance.

Extended seasons mean more billable work — even with limited labor.

How H.B. Fuller supports contractors through labor shortages

H.B. Fuller’s innovation strategy centers on speed, ease and performance — all essential to helping contractors overcome workforce pressures. Our spray bonding systems are engineered to:

Increase labor efficiency by up to 60%

Deliver consistent, high-quality bonding

Reduce waste with recyclable canisters and low VOC formulations

Support safer, flame free application methods

Optimize system compatibility across TPO, EPDM and PVC membranes

By integrating performance chemistry, recyclable packaging and ergonomic spray tools, we help contractors build more resilient workflows that require fewer skilled installers to deliver high quality results.

Why spray applied adhesives are becoming the new standard

With rising construction demand and shrinking labor pools, installation methods that save time and simplify work are quickly becoming best practice:

Faster installation

Less physical labor

Reduced jobsite complexity

Better productivity per crew member

Extended working seasons

Improved consistency and performance

Labor shortages aren’t going away anytime soon, but contractors can equip their teams with tools that offset workforce constraints. Spray applied canister adhesives represent one of the most impactful advancements in single ply roofing installation, giving crews the speed, ease and reliability they need to stay competitive.

At H.B. Fuller, we’re committed to helping contractors meet these challenges head-on with adhesive technologies designed for the realities of today’s jobsite. Because when every hour counts, the right adhesive system can make a difference.

A look at the connections, conversations and community at FRSA 2026.

At the beginning of June, the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Association (FRSA) held their much-anticipated Convention and Expo. The biggest regional roofing show in the United States, the event saw hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of attendees come together at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida for three days of education, networking and fun!

The show kicked off with a Welcome Reception sponsored by our friends at Adams and Reese and featuring food along with an open bar. It was a great way to set the tone for the show and get ready for the business of the next few days. And the next few days were busy!

There were countless education sessions and opportunities to attend, with highlights including the National Women in Roofing (NWIR)’s Table Talks session and the FRSA Business Luncheon, along with plenty of events to keep you busy, like the Beer Bust, sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Roofing Supply and GAF and the annual Foundation Auction. Not to mention the extensive trade show floor, featuring leading companies like GenFlex, Gaco, Elevate, MetalVue, Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, H.B. Fuller, Marco Industries and Progressive Metals, that was waiting for attendees to explore between events and sessions.

The Coffee Shops™ was in attendance with several crew members running a soundstage (sponsored by TAMKO) in the expo lobby. One such crew member, Jessica Bravo, our En Español program coordinator, shared a bit about the experience:

FRSA is one of my favorite trade shows of the year. Since it takes place during the summer, it has a great family friendly atmosphere and it's always nice to see so many families attending together... This year, I had the opportunity to help run the soundstage. Sitting behind the equipment with headphones connected to the microphones, I was able to listen in on some truly great conversations and interviews throughout the event.

Our president, Heidi J. Ellsworth, shared some highlights from the week, saying, “The TAMKO-sponsored sound stage served as a hub for industry conversations throughout the event, hosting more than 30 interviews with contractors, manufacturers, distributors, association leaders and roofing professionals from across North America. In addition, two full-length Coffee Conversations brought together expert panels to discuss key trends, challenges and opportunities impacting the roofing industry today.”

H.B. Fuller’s adhesives provide trustworthy solutions for low-slope and metal roofing systems.

Before the main festivities of the 2026 International Roofing Expo began, Karen Edwards had a chance to chat with Denise Tripamer, director of global marketing at H.B. Fuller, about what expo attendees could expect from the longtime commercial roofing manufacturer.

“We are the largest adhesives company in the world, and we have a lot of roofing solutions for adhered roof systems, from low-slope to metal roof systems,” Denise explained. "This year, we're really focused on innovation, speed and ease for the roofing contractor.”

With so many issues impacting the roofing industry, H.B. Fuller aims to be a reliable partner for contractors. “Even with labor shortage situations happening right now in the industry, we want to make sure that our adhesives are easy to use, safer for the contractor to be on the roof,” Denise said. “We want to make sure that we're putting out a good quality product so that the roof system will last for a long time and prevent those leaks.”

In addition to adhesives, H.B. Fuller also offers cutting-edge equipment for adhesive applications. “Sprayers allow you to have greater coverage on a roof faster while creating a more consistent application,” Denise stated.

At their IRE booth, H.B. Fuller technical experts showcased the company’s newest offering, Millennium PG-1 EF ECO2, a low-rise urethane foam designed with a patented propellant formulation. They also hosted their first exhibitor-presented seminar on innovations for low-slope roofs with speed and ease.

Denise spoke to the importance of such training, saying, “You want to make sure that you're following those proper protocols and standards and following the instructions to have the best product performance.” But contractors are never on their own, as Denise added, “Our team of experts is always available for help on a roof job to make sure that things are adhering and performing the way that we expect them to.”

H.B. Fuller showcases Millennium PG-1 EF ECO₂ at IRE 2026.

At the 2026 International Roofing Expo, Lauren White of The Coffee Shops™ spoke with Porter Temple from H.B. Fuller about the manufacturer’s newest products and industry trend insights.

The main product Porter highlighted was the Millennium PG-1 EF ECO₂. With the “EF” standing for “equipment free,” the PG-1 EF ECO₂ is thoughtfully engineered to be convenient, portable and flexible. “The nozzle is just an easy twist. You can do it without a tool — just the twist of a hand — and it switches between ribbon and spatter spray applications, which makes it easier for use in adhering fleece-back membranes,” Porter explained. “It provides a cleaner look, and it’s easy to transport.”

Furthermore, the PG-1 EF ECO₂ is H.B. Fuller’s newest formulation, engineered with the environment in mind. “There’s no HFC’s in the blowing agents. It’s made of naturally sourced atmospheric gases, and it makes less garbage in landfills, so it’s much better for the environment,” Porter said. “It’s a product we can take to market and be proud of while also making sure we’re taking care of the planet.”

At the show, the company was able to share the innovative product with new customers as well as hear feedback from existing ones. “We’re receiving very positive feedback, especially from contractors who have already used it in the field,” Porter shared, noting the learning curve that comes with the growing presence of adhesives in the market. “Adhesives in roofing are still relatively new in the grand scheme of roofing. We’re starting to see a lot more.”

Porter also highlighted the talented H.B. Fuller service team and their dedication to helping field professionals through pull tests, job starts and contractor training. “We aim to provide a robust service within the field to keep contractors moving forward, keep crews educated and working together so that we can all be better within the industry.” Porter shared.

By providing such comprehensive, attentive service, H.B. Fuller intends to lead the industry to new heights. “We like to collaborate with our contractors and our OEM partners and try to be the best that we can be to provide great roofing products within the industry,” Porter said.

H.B. Fuller's new Millennium Waterborne EPDM/TPO Bonding Adhesive delivers versatility and jobsite efficiency.

Roofing crews looking to simplify installations without sacrificing performance have a new option to consider. Introducing Millennium Waterborne EPDM/TPO Bonding Adhesive: H.B. Fuller's newest product designed to deliver fast application, flexibility and long-term reliability to modern membrane roofing systems. Developed for smooth or fleece-back EPDM and TPO membranes, this water-based adhesive supports multiple application methods, making it a practical solution for both field membrane attachment and detailed flashing work.

Contractors can apply the adhesive as a one-side wet lay-in on horizontal roof surfaces or as a two-side contact adhesive for vertical applications and flashings. This flexibility allows crews to rely on a single adhesive across different phases of a project, streamlining material selection and reducing complexity on the jobsite.

Performance is central to the product’s design. The high-strength formulation is engineered to maintain the integrity of the installed membrane over time while delivering consistent adhesion across a wide range of approved substrates. These include wood, brick or block masonry, insulation and cover boards, giving contractors confidence when working with varied roof assemblies.

Efficiency is another key advantage. The adhesive supports fast application using standard rollers or brushes, helping crews work efficiently with familiar tools and without specialized equipment. Its water-based formulation allows for easy cleanup and is VOC-free, supporting cleaner jobsites and simpler compliance with environmental requirements.

Coverage rates of approximately 115–125 square feet per gallon help contractors accurately plan material usage whether applying adhesive to the substrate only or splitting coverage between the substrate and membrane for two-side applications

Backed by H.B. Fuller’s long-standing expertise in roofing adhesives, Millennium Waterborne EPDM/TPO Bonding Adhesive offers contractors a reliable balance of performance, speed and versatility for modern EPDM and TPO roofing systems.

Industry leaders explain why long-term success depends on treating coatings as a complete roofing system.

In a recent CoatingsCoffeeShop® Coffee Conversations®, sponsored by H.B. Fuller, Megan Ellsworth spoke with Mike Kintop, senior product manager at H.B. Fuller, and Chelsea Oesch, marketing director for TRI-BUILT® at QXO, about the misconceptions in the roof coatings industry and what success looks like going forward.

The main misconception that the panel tackled was the idea that coatings are a simple top-coat, fix-all solution. “Coatings don't fix failing roofs,” Chelsea explained. “If we think about the late-night infomercial that pushed this myth of a one-coat miracle, like this bucket of goo is going to fix all of your problems, it’s created a bit of industry distrust between the homeowners and what is actual reality.”

Instead, Chelsea encouraged participants to see coatings as a system that determines long-term success, rather than just a substance. “What success really looks like is a proper assessment done to the roof. Failures happen when coatings are treated like paint, and not like a system,” Chelsea said.

Mike added, “Preparation, evaluation, priming — all those things are critical to the success of the roof, and I think we're making good progress in that direction.”

Furthermore, Mike emphasized the importance of every person in a project’s process to cultivate that success. “Each person on the team has a role,” Mike stated. “The manufacturers have a critical role in the assessment of systems and making sure all the components are compatible. Specifiers are often engaged for non-destructive testing and other parts of the process. Contractors are involved in making sure their crews are trained. So, it's a team effort.”

Chelsea agreed, saying, “I really feel like clear roles equals fewer failures. As a distributor, our role is to connect the dots between the contractor and the manufacturer and be that middleman that holds everything together.”

Collaboration, innovation and contractor engagement highlight a strong start to the year.

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) started the year with energy and purpose, hosting a highly successful Spring Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, alongside its participation at the International Roofing Expo (IRE). The week brought together manufacturers, suppliers and contractors and industry leaders for meaningful conversations focused on innovation, collaboration and the future of roof coatings.

RCMA extended appreciation to the attendees, presenters, sponsors, exhibitors, committee chairs and members whose engagement helped shape a productive event. Their continued involvement is a testament to the association’s mission to advance the roof coatings industry through technical leadership, advocacy and education.

One of the most significant announcements from the meeting was the launch of RCMA’s new Contractor Membership category, expanding the association’s reach by formally welcoming roofing contractors into the community and strengthening alignment across the entire coatings value chain. The move reflects a growing recognition that collaboration between manufacturers and applicators is essential for driving best practices, quality standards and long-term performance.

Marking the occasion, Unicoat Industrial Roofing of Bradenton, Florida, was introduced as RCMA’s first contractor member. President Cody Wilson accepted the membership certificate from RCMA President Josh Poole during the meeting, symbolizing a new chapter for the association and increased contractor representation within the organization.

Education, innovation and real-world success stories

A highlight of the Spring Meeting was an engaging panel moderated by Megan Ellsworth of CoatingsCoffeeShop®. The session brought together suppliers and contractors to discuss how roofing companies can grow their businesses by adding roof coatings and liquid-applied systems to their offerings. Delivered in a dynamic Q&A format, the panel encouraged audience participation and provided practical insights on diversification, profitability and meeting evolving building owner needs.

Attendees also heard from Will Lorenz of General Coatings, who presented a compelling project spotlight featuring the application of spray polyurethane foam and coatings on a spherical centerpiece structure in Las Vegas. The presentation demonstrated how the combined system delivered an ideal balance of durability, energy performance and long-term protection, underscoring the versatility of spray foam and coatings for complex architectural designs.

The Spring Meeting was proudly sponsored by Western Colloid, whose support helped make the educational programming and industry collaboration possible.

Technical guidance supports growing metal roofing market

RCMA also unveiled Coatings Tech Note 5, a new resource dedicated to best practices for metal roof maintenance and coating applications. As metal roofing continues to gain traction for its durability and longevity, proper evaluation and coating strategies remain critical to maximizing system performance.

The tech note delivers expert recommendations on coating options such as acrylics, polyurethanes and modified asphalt, along with guidance on rust identification, seam and fastener inspections, priming, cleaning and recoat techniques. Whether addressing aging galvanized steel, Galvalume® panels or exposed fastener systems, the document is designed to help industry professionals extend roof life while improving energy efficiency.

Supplier spotlight: Innovation driving the market

The meeting also highlighted the contributions of supplier members helping move the industry forward.

H.B. Fuller, a global leader with more than 130 years of expertise in adhesives, sealants and specialty chemicals, continues to innovate across construction and clean energy markets while delivering responsive service and long-term customer partnerships.

Ravago Chemicals, serving more than 15,000 customers across 24 countries, brings creative technical solutions and a relationship-driven approach to the specialty chemical sector. With over 50 years in North America, the company remains focused on quality, sustainability and innovation.

Get involved and help shape the future of roof coatings

RCMA committees continue to address critical priorities including regulatory developments, environmental product declarations, field studies and technical standards while the Communications, Membership and Education Committee drives industry engagement and growth initiatives such as Roof Coatings Day. At the same time, RCMA’s industry-wide Environmental Product Declaration project is entering its final phase, built on the Product Category Rule published in November 2025 that establishes a 75-year expected service life, incorporates fabric systems and defines service life tiers based on dry film thickness. Draft industry-average EPDs are now in development with final data due February 28, 2026, followed by internal and external reviews.

For professionals looking to play a larger role in the industry, joining one of RCMA’s committees offers a direct path to influencing the future of roof coatings while collaborating with leading experts across the market. Now is the time to be a part of the organization advancing innovation, advocacy and technical excellence. Whether you are a manufacturer, supplier, contractor or industry professional, membership provides access to critical resources, research and a powerful network committed to elevating industry standards.
