Warranty transference 101

Learn about how strong, transferable warranties can give homeowners peace of mind when investing in their roofs.

Replacing a roof is a huge investment, probably one of the largest ones you will ever make on your home. Beyond the monetary value, the roof is also key to protecting you and your loved ones from weather and other external environmental factors. One way that many contractors and manufacturers give homeowners a bit of extra peace of mind when investing in a new roof is through warranty coverage. In this article, learn about the PABCO Roofing Products’ warranty options and what happens to that warranty if the home is changing owners.

Understanding PABCO’s® Limited Liability Warranty

When a roof is installed, the warranty in place at that time becomes the governing coverage document. One of the standout features of PABCO’s warranty is that it’s extremely homeowner-friendly — it is designed to be easy to keep and hard to lose. Homeowners are encouraged to register their warranty, but registration is not required in order to maintain full coverage during the non-prorated period. That means as long as the shingles are installed correctly and maintained according to guidelines, the warranty is valid — even if a registration form wasn’t submitted.

Still, registering the warranty is a smart move. It helps create a clear record, provides documentation if issues ever come up and ensures the warranty start date is accurate. PABCO will default to the installation date as the start date of coverage, but if there’s no record of that date, they’ll use the shingle’s manufacturing date instead. Since shingles are often stocked and stored for a while before installation, that could shorten the overall warranty coverage.

What the warranty covers

PABCO Roofing Products offers Limited Lifetime Warranties on many of its products for the original homeowner. These warranties include a non-prorated period of 15 to 20 years depending on the shingle selected. During this time, if a manufacturing defect is found, the homeowner’s replacement shingles, tear-off and disposal are all covered. After the non-prorated period, coverage continues on a prorated basis.

Is the warranty transferable?

Yes! One of the reasons contractors and homeowners alike choose PABCO is because the warranty is fully transferable. If the homeowners sells the home, the warranty moves to the next owner. The new owner receives continued coverage under the same terms, but it shifts to a prorated schedule based on the product — 30, 40 or 50 years depending on the shingles installed. There are no transfer fees, and the process is simple.

PABCO’s approach reflects a high level of confidence in the long-term performance of their products. Some manufacturers promote long warranties but impose complicated transfer processes or limitations. PABCO makes it easy for everyone involved.

Why a transferable warranty matters

Shingle life expectancy comes down to quality — not just warranty length. When a manufacturer offers easy transferability, it signals they stand behind their product. For homeowners, this feature is a major benefit. On average, people move every 13 years — long before the roof’s useful life is over. A transferable warranty adds value and makes the home more attractive to buyers because it provides confidence to both parties and can reduce friction during the sale.

Buyers feel better knowing they’re inheriting a home with a protected roof. This also means sellers can justify a stronger asking price. A transferable warranty isn’t just a technical detail — it’s a real asset during negotiations.

The bottom line

PABCO’s warranty stands out for its simplicity, generous non-prorated period and clear transfer process. As a homeowner, knowing that their investment is protected — and that this protection continues even if they sell — is a big deal. While registration isn’t required, it’s a helpful step that locks in the install date and makes future questions or transfers easier to handle.
