If you’re already out on a roofing estimate, chances are your customer’s siding needs some attention too. By adding siding services to your roofing business, you can increase revenue per job, offer a more complete exterior remodel and better serve your homeowners. We recently sat down with two experienced exterior contractors – Matt Danitz of Road Home Exteriors in Colorado and Cole Reidl of Reidl and Son Exterior Specialists in Wisconsin – who work closely with LP Building Solutions. They shared some of their best tips for roofing contractors looking to add siding as a way to expand your business.
1 – Walk the property with your homeowner and highlight siding issues.
Homeowners often don’t notice damage or deterioration of their siding until it becomes a real problem. “Most people don’t realize they have an issue until it’s gotten really bad,” Matt said. “Walking the property with them and pointing out things like rot, warping or fading makes a big difference. It’s about educating them, not just selling.” You can build trust and help homeowners understand the value of updating their siding. If they are already having their roof replaced, it’s often easier to add services so there aren’t additional disruptions down the road.
2 – Educate your homeowner instead of reciting your sales pitch.
Both Matt and Cole emphasized the power of education when it comes to selling siding. “A lot of folks haven’t heard of LP Building Solutions [in Colorado],” Matt shared. “Once we explain how the products are made and why they hold up so well in our climate, it starts to click.”
Cole agreed, sharing, “When we get into how LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding resists moisture, stands up to pests like termites and still gives that authentic wood look, people get really interested. We’re not pushing the products on them; we’re just helping them understand the value.”
3 – Use visuals to tell the story.
“I keep photos on my phone of homes where old siding has failed – pieces falling off, moisture damage, that kind of thing,” Cole said. “Once they see what can happen, it makes the conversation real.”
If you can show before-and-after images of your own projects or display samples during a consultation, it’s all the better.
4 – Stay ahead of the market with new products.
Siding technology is always evolving, and homeowners love it when you bring new ideas to the conversation. LP Building Solutions regularly releases new styles and accessories to make installations cleaner and more customized.
“LP has been great about listening to contractor feedback,” Matt said. “They’ve come out with prefinished products that are self-flashing, and accessories like light blocks that really improve the final look.” Cole added, “They just released a nickel gap product and a new pebbled stucco finish board. When I can be the first to talk about these options in a consultation, it helps my company really stand out.”
5 – Let roofing projects open the door to siding opportunities.
Many siding projects come as an add-on to roof replacements, especially in places like Colorado, where hail damage is frequently addressed through insurance claims. Matt noted that about 40% of his siding jobs are tied to roofing work. “Insurance sometimes helps cover part of the siding, so it becomes an opportunity for the homeowners to refresh their whole exterior.”
In Wisconsin, insurance claims are less frequent, but Cole explained, “A lot of our full remodel jobs start with a roof. If someone’s thinking about replacing siding, the roof gives them a reason to do it all at once.”
Even if the siding update starts with a small suggestion, it can quickly grow into a larger scope of work. And you can be the trusted contractor to tackle all of it.
The golden rule? Educate your homeowners. Talk them through your siding options, explain how LP® SmartSide® products are made to last and don’t skip the small stuff. “It’s all about the details,” Matt closed with. “When you take the time to explain everything – the trim, the J-block, the installation techniques – that's what sets you apart.”
