Three Cases for Metal Roofs

MRA Three Cases for Better Roofs

Homeowners share why they switched to metal roofs and the benefits of their new roofs.

Three separate couples decided to replace their original roofs with metal roofs.  Pleased with the results and the appearance of their seemingly new homes, they share why they chose metal and how they feel about their upgrade.

When Hurricane Ivan hit the United States in 2004, many people and homes were affected, including Susan and Barker Stein.  During the hurricane, a large tree fell and went into their bedroom.  They wanted a roof that would protect them against hurricanes, other large storms, and wind damage.  Barker “...decided it would be better to be protected against damage than insured against damage, and the metal roof gives us that protection.”  The product they chose is an ArrowLine® shake metal shingle by EDCO.  Stefan Boyer, a roofer from Metal Roofing Headquarters, explained, “It is the most wind-resistant metal roof there is.  Because the shingle is interlocking, it doesn’t lose any strength with time.”

Susan was excited they could customize the color and texture of their roof to fit their style.  She commented, “...this wonderful shake style was really, really a great choice for us because we wanted something a little bit different than just the standard metal roof look.”  Many of their neighbors have metal roofs and comment that the Stein’s have the most appealing roof in the neighborhood. Besides being satisfied with their improved curb appeal, Susan shared, “I’m really feeling good about the longevity of the roof, it’s low maintenance, and being able to just know that it’s all done beautifully well and we’re truly safe and secure from the top down.”

Joey and Joy Crisler have been in their home for 18 years.  They decided it was time to replace their original asphalt roof, which was also 18 years old.  Wanting it to be the last roof they ever put on, they decided to have a metal roof installed, understanding it’s a more durable material.

Being in a hurricane-prone area with intense afternoon storms, they felt more secure knowing they have a metal roof above their heads.  People commonly believe metal roofs are louder than others. Joey and Joy had some concerns about this, especially when it rained, but they’re pleased that the roof doesn’t amplify any noises.  Just from installing a metal roof, they’ve been granted peace of mind knowing they’re protected from the next storm, and the quality of their house has improved immensely.

In Alabama, Ricky and Tracy Jones built the home they live in now.  Having installed a 30-year asphalt roof, they were disappointed to realize the roof had failed them after only 20 years.  Their roof suffered damage from Hurricane Katrina. After the hurricane, many people claimed to be contractors when they actually weren’t.  Ricky commented that they, “Didn’t know who was good and who was bad, you just took what you could get.” Knowing they needed their roof repaired, they hired a man who claimed he was licensed and told them he needed the money upfront.  Work commenced on the roof and after the Jones’ came home later that day, they saw they were left with a two-toned roof.

This time around they decided to have a metal roof installed, knowing it would last a lifetime.  And they hired a manufacturer and installer who is a member of the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA).  They were happy with how professional the workers were and impressed that it only took them a day and a half to finish.  Knowing the company was an MRA member gave them great comfort because they could easily communicate with the company and they knew their needs were being met.  Seeing as they also live in a hurricane-prone area, they now know their roof can withstand up to 160 mph winds, which their shingled roof couldn’t have done before.

They’re excited the roof is all the same material and all the same color now.  The darker color they chose has actually kept their home cooler in the warm southern climate.  The Jones’ couldn’t be more pleased with their metal roof, commenting that it “looks like a new home.”

These are only three testimonies to the durability, appearance, and benefits of metal roofs.  They provide people with safety and security, and they are likely the last roof anyone will need to install on their home.  The Metal Roofing Alliance provides homeowners with roofers who are reputable and professional.
