At the 2025 International Roofing Expo (IRE), Malarkey Roofing Products revealed ambitious expansion plans alongside its continued push toward sustainable innovation. Speaking with Lauren White, Malarkey sales team executives Mike Fields and Craig Lott shared details about a new 135-acre manufacturing plant slated to open in Franklin, Indiana by mid-2026, a development that promises to surpass all existing company facilities in both scale and capabilities.
“This plant will be larger than all of our other plants combined,” said Mike, who serves as senior director for the west division. The company selected Indiana for its available land, strong labor pool and favorable logistics for raw material sourcing. He added, “It looked really good to us.”
The expansion aligns with Malarkey’s sharpened focus on what it now calls “sustainable performance,” a concept that blends environmental responsibility with product durability. Rather than simply recycle for recycling’s sake, the company has pushed its suppliers to develop new modifiers, including rubber from used tires and polymers from plastic bags, that enhance product performance while reducing landfill waste.
Craig, senior director for the central division, explained: “We’re taking stuff out of the landfill and making our product better. It performs better on the roof and offers better granule retention.”
In partnership with 3M, Malarkey has also incorporated smog-reducing granules into its shingles. These granules chemically convert airborne pollutants into water-soluble nitrates, helping clean the air with every rainfall. “Every year, those roofs are pulling smog out of the air,” Craig said, noting the environmental and marketing advantages.
To make these benefits tangible, Malarkey developed an online sustainability calculator. Homeowners and contractors can use it to see their roof’s estimated environmental impact, such as how many tires are recycled or how much air-cleaning power their roof provides, equating the results to metrics like planting trees.
With competition in the roofing industry tightening, Malarkey is betting that measurable sustainability will set them apart.
