Roofers turn to trade schools and tech to attract next-gen workforce

Roofers turn to trade schools and tech to attract next-gen workforce
May 29, 2025 at 3:00 a.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Roofing companies are using training, tech and social media to recruit a younger generation and reshape the industry's future.

As the roofing industry faces a generational shift, companies are adopting new strategies to stay competitive in a tight labor market — focusing not just on roofs, but on recruitment. With many seasoned professionals nearing retirement, roofing firms like Hi Peak Staffing Solutions are ramping up efforts to draw younger talent by transforming how the trade is perceived and taught. Central to this push are hands-on apprenticeship programs and partnerships with trade schools that teach roofing techniques, safety protocols and even project management.

To better appeal to Gen Zers and millennials, companies are also embracing modern technology. From drones that conduct roof inspections to cloud-based project management tools, tech-savvy recruits are finding there’s more to roofing than they expected. Sustainability initiatives, like solar panel integration and green roofing systems, also resonate with environmentally conscious job seekers.

But attracting their attention means meeting the next generation where they are — online. Roofing firms are increasingly active on platforms like TikTok, Instagram and LinkedIn, sharing success stories, day-in-the-life videos and career pathway highlights. The goal? Show that roofing can be both financially and personally rewarding.

Companies are also working to improve internal culture. Inclusive workplaces, mental health support and clear paths to advancement are becoming priorities. By offering competitive compensation, mentorship programs and community outreach events, the industry is trying to break outdated stereotypes.

For companies ready to invest in their future workforce, trade schools offer an essential pipeline. Many vocational institutions now feature dedicated construction programs with roofing components, providing the foundational skills new hires need. Industry associations like the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) also support standardized training and apprenticeship networks across the country.

Learn more about how roofing companies are redefining the trade through education, technology and outreach to build a workforce for the future!
