Extending the Season With Shingles that Perform in Cooler Temps

TAMKO Cold Weather Roofing
March 24, 2023 at 6:00 a.m.

For the majority of the country, winter comes with cold temperatures and a potentially shorter roofing season, so what do roofing contractors do to extend their season, repair or even re-roof during winter?

First, it is important for roofers to look at the products that they are using to see if they have the performance features to install in cooler temperatures.

TAMKO’s Titan XT® premium architectural asphalt shingles feature several proprietary technologies that can aid in cooler weather installation of the shingles.  Launched in 2021, Titan XT® shingles feature some of the most advanced innovative technology in the industry. With powerful engineering, Titan XT shingles are designed to offer an advantage for both homeowners and contractors, combining in-demand product features into one Extreme Technology shingle designed to help weather extreme conditions.

Product performance in the cooler months can be attributed to features that are specifically engineered for extreme performance. For example, the following features of the Titan XT shingle help the product with cold weather application and performance in various types of weather.

  1. AnchorLock™ Layer Technology – The reinforcing strip of polyester fabric on the back of the shingle is embedded in the common bond area and provides reinforcement for the expanded nail zone. It helps the shingle anchor to the roof deck and resist blowing off or tearing off the deck even if high winds get under the shingle.

  1. Advanced Fusion™ Sealants – This aggressive sealant is specifically designed to be sticky, even in cooler weather, and helps the shingles seal to themselves and the roof deck. Combined with the AnchorLock™ layer, these aggressive sealants inspired the industry-first 160 MPH high wind warranty; with only four nails installed in the expanded nailing zone, when using TAMKO® Starter.

  1. Starter Strip – TAMKO® Starter is a requirement for the 160 MPH wind warranty and, help secure the first course of shingles and acts as a barrier to the to protect eaves and rake edges.  The starter strip is essential for high-wind performance and water resistance, and is a key element when used with ice and water shield underlayments to prevent ice damming.

Be sure to follow all shingle installation instructions and look for shingles that have technologies that aid in cooler weather application like Titan XT® shingles to extend your roofing season.
