At ServiceCon 2025, one speaker didn’t need hype or theatrics to steal the show; he just brought the truth with him to the stage! Greg Hayne, founder of the Hayne Coaching Group, delivered a straightforward, no-nonsense message to contractors and business leaders: stop obsessing over tasks and start investing in yourself.
Known in the roofing industry for his direct style and peer group facilitation, Greg framed his talk around a simple but powerful visual. Holding up a container and a pile of black beans, he illustrated how most professionals are overwhelmed by the growing demands of business — estimating, project delays, insurance, compliance — all spilling over. The key, he argued, isn’t to manage more beans. It’s to build a bigger container.
“You need to work harder on yourself than you do on your job,” he said, quoting Jim Rohn and pointing out that personal growth is often what unlocks business success, not the other way around.
Greg's presentation was peppered with relatable insights from his work with roofing contractors across the country. He spoke to the reality of scaling a business, challenging the myth that larger firms have it all figured out. “I've got a number of friends in the industry that are big contractors and one of them pulled me aside... he says, ‘You have to understand, I've never taken a company from 40 million to 60 million before. I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm figuring it out as I go along.’”
The session touched on a core idea many professionals quietly wrestle with: success without fulfillment. Greg described the journey of leaders who rose through the ranks only to feel aimless at the top. “He’s making lots of money, doesn’t need to be in the office and he’s bored,” Greg said of one such executive.
That restlessness inspired Greg to develop an online course, “What’s Next: Navigating Life Transitions,” designed to help people proactively rethink their paths. He stated, “Whenever I need something new, it starts with: ‘This is no longer working for me.’”
Greg’s message goes beyond CEOs and company founders. He expressed that personal development is essential at every level of an organization, from new hires to veteran managers. The concept of expanding one’s capacity is relevant to anyone aiming to grow, lead or find more purpose in their work.
