The market index survey for reroofing is put together by a coalition of trade associations to assess the industry for successes and gaps.

The Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing provides a valuable snapshot of the industry’s successes and gaps both throughout the year and year over year. Put together by a coalition of trade associations, the results act like a barometer to assess the industry’s business conditions.  Justin Koscher, president of the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) helped us gather some of the key takeaways from the Q4 survey, which were released in January 2024.

Respondent demographics

  • Business type: This quarter, 72% of respondents were contractors and 28% were consultants.

  • Market type: Within markets, 41% of respondents work primarily in low-slope only, 17% work in steep-slope only, and 42% work in some blend between steep-slope and low-slope.

  • Materials installed: When asked about the change in volume of materials year-over-year for Q4 2023, 50% of roofing contractor respondents reported an increase in materials installed from the same quarter in the previous year. 30% reported that installation of materials stayed about the same, and 20% reported a decrease in volume.

Customer inquiries

  • For the number of customer inquiries, 37% of respondents reported an increase in inquiries compared to the same quarter of the previous year. 47% reported that the number stayed about the same, and 16% reported a decrease compared to Q4 of 2022.

Project questions

  • Project contracts: 42% of respondents reported an increase in project contracts from the same quarter last year. 41% noted that project contracts stayed about the same, while 17% reported a decline.

  • Project backlogs: For 37% of respondents, they are still experiencing project backlogs around one to two months. Around 17% of respondents reported having no project backlog and only 11% reported backlogs longer than six months. 27% or respondents reported project backlogs of three to four months and 9% were between five and six months.
