2022 Hurricane Forecast: Wild, Wet and Windy

DaVinci hurricane forecast

By DaVinci Roofscapes.

Hang onto your hammers. Apparently Mother Nature isn’t taking a year off.

According to a variety of industry sources, the 2022 Hurricane Season will be especially brutal. Predictions from experts at Colorado State University call for higher than average storm activity this year. The chart below tells the story… more of everything. From named storm days to major hurricanes.

+A measure of a named storm’s potential for wind and storm surge destruction defined as the sum of the square of a named storm’s maximum wind speed (in 104 knots2) for each 6-hour period of its existence.

The Weather Channel (TWC) primarily agrees with predictions from the team at Colorado State University. While both forecast four major hurricanes (reaching Category 3 or higher), TWC believes there will be 20 Named Storms and eight hurricanes. Still enough powerful weather to concern roofers…and homeowners.

Dealing with tough news in a tough year

Surely the prediction of potential serious storm increases is connected with climate changes we’re constantly hearing about in the news. But, bringing it down to our level as roofers, how does this impact us?

In a year when supply and demand issues, along with pricing, are challenging for everyone, it’s critical to make the smartest product recommendations possible to clients and customers. Clearly severe weather conditions are here to stay…so recommending roofing material that can withstand hurricane-force winds, hail and impact makes a great deal of sense.

And, we’re not talking about just coastal areas. The effects of storms during hurricane season appear to be going deeper inland these days. Winds getting up to Category 2 or 3 can be found in many inland states as storms push through a region.

Which roofing products to consider

As you consider which products to recommend to your customers, consider this. DaVinci composite shake and slate roofing products are made to stand up to Mother Nature in all her fury. These products have achieved a Class 4 impact rating, which is the highest grade possible. This means that DaVinci’s composite roofing has a greater chance of helping protect a home from damage related to flying debris or hail during severe weather.

DaVinci tiles have also achieved the Miami-Dade County Acceptance and Texas Department of Insurance criteria for high velocity hurricane winds. These roofing tiles have the highest rating for straight line wind testing at 110mph in the ASTM D3161 test. They’ve also passed the testing for High Velocity Hurricane Zones.

When you’re recommending a product to a customer, don’t you want to KNOW it will be able to stand up to the storm? DaVinci products are backed by a Lifetime Limited Materials Warranty. The DaVinci product you install on a home should last through winter storms, gale storms, hurricane conditions and other nasty weather. All without breaking a sweat.

Be the hero

Whether you’re coming in before the storm in preparation for the upcoming season or after a storm to replace a roof, be the hero. Make the recommendation of a composite roof. According to Trent Lovewell with John Higgins Weatherguard, Inc., homeowners needing a new roof are ready to upgrade to a high-performance product.

“Why should homeowners go back to the same type of roof that will get damaged in another hail storm?” asks Lovewell. “They’re going to keep paying the deductible and that can get expensive. Investing in a high-performance roofing product makes good, common sense.

“Here’s another benefit. We’ve definitely seen where homeowner insurance premiums drop when people select a composite roof, like a DaVinci roof. The insurance companies recognize that these man-made roofs outperform natural materials and asphalt. That performance brings confidence to the insurance company that you’ll have fewer long-term claims.”

Laughing at Mother Nature

Need a true-life example to share with your customers on why to invest in a composite roof? Then read and share George Fleet’s story. His was the only beachfront home to keep its roof during Hurricane Michael in 2019. Why? Because he invested in a DaVinci roof.

“When I returned from evacuating to my family’s house in Atlanta, there stood my perfect home,” says Fleet of Port St. Joe, Florida. “There were only three or four roof tiles that lifted a bit, but I can fix that easily. It’s a blessing that this DaVinci roofing did exactly what it was designed to do — protect my home from a hurricane.

“I selected the DaVinci product for both its appearance and durability. Now look at it…this roof has survived a Category 4 storm and still looks great!”
