I'm an accountant for a mid-sized roofer. We do commercial, residential and service. I've been tasked with finding new accounting software. Would like ease of use, job costing, construction documents automatically, daily payroll, be able to scan documents into files and........not spend too much money. Anybody got any favorite software they use? Need some names. Thanks, Accountant Ray>>>

We are what I would consider a mid sized contractor. All residential work, around 17-20 mil a year. We use QB enterprise contractor edition. Other than a less than robust inventory module, I believe it is the best bang for the buck.>>>

We use QuickBooks. We are satisfied with the software. We outsource our HR so there is no payroll to speak of. We also outsource legal and engineering. This keeps our accounting very simple.

And what do you call "mid-size"?

I use GEAC Software's "Construction Manager", and have used it for 15 years. At the time of initial purchase it was owned by Software Shop, who was bought out by GEAC, and cost me $8,000.00

I have about 40 employees and do around 5M/year. All commercial.

"The Construction Manager" is by far the best combination of total integration and ease of use, but it is capable of running mega-contracting corporations, and last I heard, several years ago, it was nearly $100,000.00 for a full blown version.

Quickbooks is tough to beat for most roofing contractors. The upgraded versions, like "pro" and "contractor" have some very good integration, job costing and document production capabilities. I would hate to take the step backward into Quickbooks, but if I had to pay today's prices for what I have................................ I would be buying quickbooks.

The key to good accounting software isn't so much the software as it is initial thought to the set-up process., imho.>>>
