We have a city license here, which I kind of feel like is a $600 sucker tax.

There is no compliance enforcement. If a homeowner calls to verify a license they probably won't call back.>>>

Hi,

I never seen a law that made people honest and reputable.

Every new law that is made just makes more citizens, criminals.>>>

Here in Illinois we must nave the roofing lics. Never really meant much untill the city that I am based in ( the largest city West of Chicago implemented a roofing permit system). It was about time. It took me 3 years of complaining to local officials to>>>

Mike H.,

I completely agree with you. The Michigan Residential Builder license which I currently hold only indicates that a) I was able to pass the test and b) I wrote a check. This document indicates nothing about my competence in the trade, my integri>>>

Hi BoBo,

You just need a business licence. Same with us in Pa.

You are a little different in NJ. You need a lawyer on retainer in NJ to pull a permit. That is when I stopped doing work in NJ. I never did much work in NJ, now I do not even do the reffer>>>

its funny around here you need a license but it means nothing, everyone has one, no big deal to get it just send in the check, i lose jobs to legit contractors everyday because of price. they price things so low the guys who aren't legit can barley comp>>>

It does bother me too, but here in Michigan, if you are not licensed and you do work over $600.00, legally the home owner doesn't have to pay you! Since the contractor wasn't licensed, he really can't do anything to the homeowner either. It is kind o>>>

Another post lost to the cyber world..........

This is why I am staunchly against contrctor licensing laws. License laws do nothing more than lend credibility to the least common denominator among us. In a non-license state, we compete in a "buyer bew>>>

I don't know your tax rules, but in our jurisdiction, any contract, whether for services or material, collects sales tax from the customer. Some non-legal contractors show a false tax number on their invoice, collect sales tax, but obviously, don't rem>>>

Why would they owe state sales tax? We pay sales taxes on all materials when purchased. Wouldnt they only owe sales tax if they are a re-seller of materials for profit, buying tax exempt? Just curious.>>>

In a jurisdiction where licensing is mandatory, a contractor who is unlicensed is committing fraud by alleging that they can do the work of a licensed contractor. The amount of the fraud is the difference between what it costs to do the job by a licensed>>>

In Massachusetts roofers unfortunatly only have to register as a home improvment contractor "HIC". no real value in that all they have to do is send in some money to the state bureauocrats. I try to stress to them that even though not required we hold a>>>

Yeah license deal is bad, but we dont need them in Indiana either...that sounds like a Florida problem, why even have them if not enforced??

I do think we should be able to collect damages from all the "contractors" who hire illegals who can't speak>>>

. . . . . and the response to the phone call giving the heads up on the illegal contracting will be that the state or municipality doesn't have the re$ource$ or manpower to enforce the law.

Our local building inspectors are instructed by the state to ca>>>
