My supplier use to give account holders a discounted price. They price materials in 1-19 sq, 20-59Sq and over 60 Sq price. Use to be all account holders got the over 60 price range all the time. I have been buying my shingles at Lowes this year because they were $20 a sq cheaper then supply house. So now the supply house has changed the rules and require me to spend $100,000 a year to get the discount.....so since they took the discount I can buy shingles cheaper almost everywhere. I don't think they understand that I won't start buying $100,000 from them again until they get me a competitive price and they won't give a competitive price until I spend $100,000, lol. BTW.....I have been an account holder with them for 15 years. Example......Yesterday my supplier quoted me $85.12 a sq for IKO but I can buy them for $71.50 from my wholesaler. My supplier quoted me $91.00 on O/C Duration and Lowes quoted $81.00.
Any of you smaller guys ever deal with this?
Thanks
the last job I did my regular supplier gave a price for terne II AT $178.00 A ROLL FOR 20 INCH x 50 FT. I let my fingers do the walking and ended up paying $71.00 a roll. Somebody was trying to screw somebody here! 15 years of loyalty and paying my bill on time and that's how I was rewarded. the order was for 5000 ln. ft. no small order.
Most of us I think are the same. If we can get the same products for less well lets see hmmm never mind it just makes perfect business sense to buy the cheaper. Loyalty to people is a good thing. If your competitors are smoking you because they can buy for less if that is your model what are you going to do. I believe I have an unusual situation business wise. It hasn't always been this way so I can only speak from the past. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzLB4xAY10Y&feature=related B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day
Loyal people go both ways. I have supported my supplier for 15 years, but when they don't show the love back........I have no problem moving on. If they need $85 and another supplier only needs $71 for same product......someone is getting screwed!
I wonder how many of us have a small mom and pop supplier. I know we don't anymore. Supplier are ABC Gulf Coast Eagle and Bradco + the usual Home Depot and Lowes. Mom and pops hardware nope none zip notta. So with that in mind I'll shop for the lowest price and up my prices. That's business by the way. The suppliers including Lowes know me by my first name and have many friends in those places. I could tell you all the stories it could fill volumes way to much for this thread. in response to being happy with shopping at the big box stores, these stores are huge corpoartions with alot of buying power. They are able to set there prices low by A. buying sub grade shingles made to there specifications B. jacking up the cost of there sub par accessories. and C buying in mass volume obviously gives them the better price. Supporting these compnays does little for your commuinty besides providing low paying jobs to unskilled un knowledgable workers. I dictate my own price and will always pay a little more to keep my local supplier in buisness. He is not a rich man (he lives to blocks from me) but they are good people they will help you out in a pinch if needed. And they know your names, kids names, and your storys. Try calling up Mr Ceo at menards, home depot, lowes even abc for that matter, see how far you get. Sorry to rant but listing to people brag about saving money at these stores while there neighbors who have put there life into there family buisness are just keeping the doors open for them and basically getting screwed by the material manufacurers reminds me of what is wrong with america. makes me sick.. So go buy your shingles at wal mart or whatever else you gotta do to keep your cut throught prices down.
No need to be sorry! I's ah funin ya!
I don't even pay a lot of attention to shingle prices. As long as I don't drop under $7. a foot, I'll be OK to get my bids and not lose anything.
Old School Said: That makes sense. I was looking at the posts that were talking about shingles and not slate.
Well duh! They are my shingles! :P
My largest competitor was over the other day to buy slate from me and said Sammy wanted that for a new batch of Bucks. 12 x 24's I believe. Or it could have been 16 x 24's. I only had 14x26 in the larger sizes.
USA. Why?
$875. a sq, and $565. a sq respectively here, not counting all the 'trim' which kicks it up another $170. per sq. Nails at $600.00 per box too.
I stopped by the supply house after not being there for a few months. I asked if prices were going up and the response " rumors had it they were on Monday nothing set in stone" Ok this was a red flag for me.....the supplier blames it conveniently on the manufacturer????? I believe it is the supply house raising prices to fit there business model. I don't buy huge supplies of roofing material anymore. It amazed me in the past you would buy a new car and pay 20-30+ thousand and get a 1year warranty. Roofing, 5+ warranty 7-9 thousand???? Personally it irk me.
