I would like to try my hand at a copper barrel dormer. does anyone know where i can find the details on how to flash the last pans to the steep shingle roof
This is how the old roof looked. No seams were soldered, just caulked
My plan was to double fold . But I am still trying to work this out in my head thanks for the help
Shangler it is by far the hardest type of roof to do. The panels have to be made perfect. Draw a template of the arch and use that to compare your panel you are stretching. You will need a lot of clamps to hold it in place as you fit it place. Use small tongs to bend the seams (1 inch wide is best) And work it slow. Your making the metal do something it wont do naturally. It will stretch. Are you going to double fold like they should be?
you make it sound easy
The seams just die into the valley. Turn the edge down and solder it to the roof.
this roof is a 12/12 and dormer is 6'diameter. i think i follow on stretching 2' out of the valley but not sure what to do with the seams that die into the valley. also can this be done with the ultra pan coil material that i think is 1/2 hard
To expand on my other post. You have to realize what your metal has to do when intersecting the main roof plain. It has to go in two directions and the valley radius is smaller the the outside valley metal. If you have a metal stretcher you can stretch about 2 inches of material up onto the roof and then bend a hook seam to lock on to and solder. The bottom three pics are of a very radical barrel and extremely hard to do. They are traditional double folded standing seam. The top pic. is on a lower slope roof and I could roll it through the curve with minimal issues. My next project I'm working on now is a very large weather vain . It will sit on a tower 60 ft. in the air. The arrow is 6 ft. long and it has a 12 inch copper sphere on top. The base is 6 ft wide. I'll be posting pics. as I make it. I made the Arrow head yesterday and started on the feathers also. C:UsersLarryPictures2013-01-10 COPPER ROOF
I don't know why it wont let me make the pic larger but anyway heres a few pics. of some I did.
Now to your question. If the roof your tying into is steep you will have to make a seam at the transition and solder it. If its a low pitch you can roll the copper through it if the pieces are small enough.
Make a template with felt paper and then trace it on the copper and add what you need up the roof to make seam.
Are you buying the panels or are you making them
I make my own.
