Asbestos Testing Residential Flat Roof Tearoffs.

Was tearing off and replacing a flat roof on an cornice attached to the front of a brownstone. About 3' deep by the width of the house, about 20'. We were throwing it down into the front yard.

Mike H, We weren't using a saw. We were chopping it with an ax and hatchets and prying it up. There were quite a few layers of roof there, but the whole area wasn't even a square.>>>

I hired the asbestos removal contractor after 95% of the roof was torn off and on the ground, the inspector shut down the job, tested the material, and said it was asbestos.>>>

Yeah, unless you are grinding, cutting or abraiding the asbestos, it isnt even a regulated material. I just had to go through all of this to find out if pressure washing an old coating from transite would require an abatememnt comapnay. At first I thoug>>>

This might raise a few eyebrows around the inspectors office....I think once you have been labeled as an asbestos site, then all of the OSHA and regulatory oversight step in and watch you like a dog on a chain staring on a bone just out of reach. Then it>>>

well if i have any Q about it at all we test, if its a small resd. job then prob not. but i do know all i need to do it pay 100 dollars for a different dumpster that has a removable cover and all debris can be mixed not really big deal>>>

What state are you in?

If you didn't use a roof saw, there was no issue according to OHio EPA regs. The stuff's not even regulated to go to a hazzardous landfill.

Did they say what the $13,000 was for? Is it a fine? If so, for what? Did you illegally dispose of it? It doesn't sound like it. I'm sure your attorney can explain to the EPA that you weren't on s>>>

It has always been my understanding that unless asbestos is friable, then it cannot be considered carcinogenic. I have a fairly extensive library of numerous state publications concerning this, fairly outdated, but possible still relevant. Let me know w>>>
