Oh, hail!

Industry experts share their advice on upselling composites to help you grow your business.

Which type of roofer are you? After hail reduces a homeowner’s roof to Swiss cheese, are you a “let’s play this game again next year” roofer or a “one and done” roofer?

The roofer who comes out and replaces a roof with the same material knows he’ll see that customer again. It may not be next year, but within a few years after another devastating hailstorm he’ll be called back to replace another roof. He’s securing repeat business.

The “one and done” roofer pushes the homeowner to invest more dollars now in their replacement roof so they’ll never have to see him again. That’s the roofer who educates the homeowner and recommends Class 4 impact-resistant composite roofing.

Upselling composites

“We have a lot of storms that roll through Oklahoma during the Spring and Fall,” says Jeff McRay, president of McRay Roofing & Exteriors. “Many times they carry big hail stones with them. DaVinci tiles by far are the best at withstanding damage from hail. With deductible as high as they’ve ever been, the homeowner can feel comfortable that their DaVinci roof will probably not ever need to be replaced. I think it’s the best material that I can install for my homeowners.”

Proving his point is Oklahoma City resident Jim Bowers.

“We were in a never-ending pattern of hailstorms,” says Bowers. “Our home had composition roofing. I was just tired of messing with the roof damage. When I asked McRay Roofing & Exteriors for a solution, they told me about DaVinci Single-Width Slate roofing.”

That was back in 2014. Since then, StormerSite.com lists 105 hail events in the Oklahoma City area. Bowers says there have been no dents or impacts on his composite tiles from any of the hailstorms over the past decade.

“This roof has handled hailstorms very well,” says Bowers. “And, we save about five percent on homeowners insurance every year because we invested in the composite roof. We found a great roofer and made a smart investment.”

Listen to the pros

What about the concept of “one and done” for building a business? If you’re not returning to customers for “repeat re-roofs” can you really grow your company sales? Roofers across the country weigh in with their thoughts:

  • “Offering DaVinci has helped us add an additional seven figures to our bottom line at the end of the year. It really helps distinguish us from the competition. It’s taken our company to the next level.” — Carlton Kohler, DMC, owner of Elite Exteriors
  • “We’re very keen on selling DaVinci Roofscapes products. The quality of their composite products and warranty have propelled us into the high-end roofing market in the past couple of years. This has given us great opportunities to gain new clients.” — Taylor Bookman, DMC, managing partner of T-Rock Roofing
  • “DaVinci products are made to withstand the severe weather conditions we experience in the Southwest. We install dozens of stunning roofing projects each year with these durable composite shingles. They hold up beautifully through storms. In addition, they add a great deal of value to a home.” — Jonathan Shaw, DMC, owner of SPC Construction & Roofing
  • “We’ve seen about a 10-15% steady yearly increase in composite roofing over the past few years. The product has a quality reputation, so I expect that trend to continue. We certainly plan to capitalize on the success our company has had selling DaVinci products for almost two decades. So, we’ll keep focusing on sales of their products.” — Shawn Wittenberg, DMC, president of Duration Construction
