What performance really means

What performance really means
June 21, 2025 at 3:00 a.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

Storms are intensifying. Homeowners are paying attention. Product performance is essential.

In a recent Read Listen Watch® (RLW), Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Jon Abernathy and Fallon Anawalt of TAMKO® to discuss what truly defines high-performance shingles and why you should care. They explained how TAMKO performance shingles are engineered to meet today’s severe weather demands and how these products can elevate your confidence in the field.

Here’s a breakdown of the key components defining high performance for TAMKO, and why they matter:

1 - TriShield™ Technology: The backbone of performance

TAMKO’s performance shingles, like Titan® XT and StormFighter FLEX®, are built on TriShield Technology, a system of three core components engineered for long-term durability. “TriShield Technology is what provides sealant technology the ability to grip so well,” shared Fallon. “As far as granules holding firm, sealant gripping strong and laminate maintaining its integrity... that’s what creates a reinforced system.”

2 – Anchor Lock layer: Engineered for wind resistance

Holding power is everything if shingles are going to stay put on top of the roof during hurricane-force winds. “Our fabric is fuzzy compared to woven,” Jon explained. “It really goes and bonds like rebar to help hold and support the shingle.” And the difference shows. “We’re able to help ensure your shingles stay firmly in place up to 160 mile-per-hour winds,” Fallon added.

3 - ForceFlex™ technology: Cold-weather confidence

In northern climates where the roofing season is shorter, the ability to install in cold weather makes a substantial difference. TAMKO’s StormFighter FLEX shingles feature ForceFlex technology which delivers flexibility and sealing performance in lower temperatures. Jon explained, “With our StormFighter FLEX product, it can be installed and fully warrantied down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, which is pretty awesome.” That means contractors can extend their season, and homeowners can get roofs replaced even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Each element of this technology plays a role in resisting weather-related damage:

  • Polymer-modified asphalt delivers enhanced flexibility and strength
  • Proprietary sealants activate at 40-60°F, bonding shingles quickly and reducing uplift risk
  • Anchor Lock™ layer, a bonded fabric, reinforces the nailing area for better holding power

Why it matters

Homeowners are beginning to take a closer look at what’s on their roof and why it matters. With higher deductibles and rising insurance costs, they want to ensure their roofing system will hold up against the weather. “I had a big contractor from Florida up here recently,” Jon shared. “He told me, ‘The brand I was using was all over the road [after a recent storm] ... homeowners are starting to ask questions. Why is this shingle staying on the roof and why is this one not?’ He now uses exclusively TAMKO products.”

The pain points are clear. Homeowners want resilience, reliability and reasons to believe in the products they’re buying. High-performance shingles give you the ability to meet those expectations with confidence.
