At the 2025 International Roofing Expo (IRE), Swiss-based construction materials leader Sika Roofing & Waterproofing made a significant splash with the launch of two groundbreaking membrane technologies. Designed to simplify applications and elevate performance standards across U.S. roofing systems, these products mark a move forward in innovative breakthroughs for the industry.
The company, known globally for its urethane innovations, unveiled a new dual-modified bitumen membrane and a hand-applied polyurea solution, both aimed at meeting the evolving demands of contractors and commercial developers nationwide.
“We’re bringing simplicity and a high-performance product,” said Juliana Grippa, who has been with Sika for 12 years and now plays a key business role in new product development. The new membrane combines SBS and APP technologies into a single system, enabling nationwide use without region-specific modifications. Juliana added, “We can use one product for the whole US. We don’t need to use different types. It fits to all the climates; it fits to all the types of applications as well.”
The product’s versatility was a central theme for the Sika team, which has long catered to varied environmental and structural conditions across the U.S. roofing market. With this innovation, contractors can reduce inventory complexity and minimize installation variables without compromising durability or resistance.
Also turning heads was the debut of a hand-applied polyurea membrane. Historically known for their robust chemical resistance and extreme durability, polyureas have typically required expensive spray equipment and highly trained applicators. “All the same benefits that you would normally get with a polyurea but in hand applied application — very tough, very chemical resistant, user-friendly formulation,” said David Axt, Sika’s technical director for liquid-applied membranes.
Mike Darsch, vice president of technical services, noted how the timing of the launches aligns with broader strategic goals. “This is a big focus for our IRE push as well as moving forward,” he said. “Showcasing the time proven performance of our PVC membranes but now with a new material that we can have in the marketplace to really extend our portfolio of availability.”
While the expo spotlighted several new products across the roofing landscape, Sika’s announcements stood out for their practical implications and potential market impact. The blend of chemistry, performance and ease of application is likely to resonate well beyond the convention floor.
