From leaks to a punch-list free project

From leaks to a punch-list free project

Inside the award-winning Clement Elementary roof installation.

Every year, Duro-Last highlights the incredible work of their contractors and installers through their Project of the Year Awards. We got the chance to sit down with Alton Rogerson of B&M Roofing and Bill Paynter of Diamond P Building Products for an episode of Stories from the Roof all about their work on the 2025 Metal Roofing Award project of the year – Clement Elementary School in Autryville, North Carolina.

Clement Elementary had been struggling with roof leaks for decades before they were able to budget to have them redone. Alton explained, “The building already had a standing seam roof on it and then the flat sections had an EPDM. But they’ve been struggling with leaks since the install back in 2000.” So when the B&M Roofing team got there, they first had to take the faulty roof off, removing everything down to the cover board and ice/water shield.

From there, they began working on installing a new standing seam roof, 52,000 square feet of roof to be exact. There were also 7,500 square feet of wall panels and 15,000 square feet of single ply membrane (Duro-Tuff 50 mil) that had to be installed. Bill shared a bit of the behind the scenes work that went into the project, saying, “It was the largest metal project I've been a part of. We had an engineer that was involved and he was pretty demanding. We had to be at the top of our game, but it paid off. When we got done with that project, the inspector came out and did the final inspection on that roof. And he was an experienced guy with 20 years of experience. He told us that this was the first project that he had ever done where there was no punch list at the end of.”

From there, the information about the project was sent to Duro-Last and before he knew it, Alton was at the Duro-Last National Convention in January, holding the 2025 Metal Roofing Award.

Listen to the full conversation with Alton and Bill to learn more about their experiences with this project and the larger roofing industry.
