Lansing Intentional Communities (LINCS), a vital community program in Lansing, Michigan, dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities, recently received a new roof thanks to the collaboration between local contractor Acme Home Exteriors, Habitat for Humanity Capital Region and GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. Local suppliers, Eikenhout and Sunrise Seamless, also pitched in to make the project a success.
The team completed a full roof replacement on a LINCS home currently undergoing renovation by Habitat for Humanity Capital Region, which involved removing three layers of old roofing, including original wood shingles, and installing new roof decking before the final installation. This crucial upgrade addressed the aging condition of the previous roof and ensured the long-term structural integrity and safety of the home for future residents.
The renovated home will soon welcome new, lifelong tenants, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, expanding LINCS’ capacity to provide safe, supportive housing. The LINCS program empowers residents to live as independently as possible, offering a strong community network and comprehensive, person-centered services to create a nurturing environment where individuals can thrive. Family members of participants often highlight how the program has significantly boosted their loved ones’ confidence and quality of life.
All cost savings resulting from this donation will be redirected to other LINCS initiatives, such as transforming a donated vacant lot in the neighborhood into a community gathering place and garden, broadening the program’s positive impact. Additionally, these savings will enable LINCS to complete essential safety upgrades and timely maintenance on two of their existing residences.
Acme Home Exteriors installed the new roof with materials donated by GAF. This collaboration is part of GAF’s social impact initiative, GAF Community Matters, which is focused on making a positive difference as neighbors and partners in the community by leveraging roofing expertise, resources and products to help build resilient communities
“At Acme Home Exteriors, we believe that our business success is measured not just by the projects we complete, but by the positive impact we’re able to create for our community. This partnership with Habitat for Humanity Capital Region and GAF is a perfect example,” shares Dan Smeak, owner of Acme Home Exteriors. “It’s about more than just a roof — it’s about showing how collaboration across organizations truly makes a difference in people’s lives. We hope our work inspires other contractors to get involved in meaningful ways, because when we come together, we can achieve so much more than any one of us could alone.”
