We see a lot of these half a__ repairs. They don't know what a head lap is or a BIB (shime). They know caulking and roof cement only. A real roofer knows how to do all types of real roofing.

They reflashed the chimney by nailing steps on top of and through the slates alongside the chimeny. Then, they of somebody else cemented the whole mess.

Oh yeah, I just bought 2 small pallets of broken slate to replace that overhang I can't repair on the Ragged Random job. Haven't got the go ahead yet either. Got paid for the one side, and still have the other side and the main house to do.

I honestly don't know what they were doing. Maybe they thought bibs would do the trick. One was a wide tin bib, and it had sagged and lots of water was running off the sides of the bib.

I'd almost go for those. I never have enough. Money-wise, I'm not sure. Haven't been paid for one job. 2/3 through another and never met the clients. Started another and need even more money for it. Busy here. I'm even thinking of bringing Martin in.

They did get the headlap issue solved with some of their repair work. Here are three pix I bothered to take to prove they could get that right, at least 25-35 times.

You get many OS? You look around, see two broken slate and they're near a previous repair. You pull a broke one and 12 slates later, you're still pulling 'built-in leaks'!!!!!!!!AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    Some clients understand. Some, I just take onto the roof to show what's happening.

This is daily for me, BTW. 3 more of these lowballers have gone under. I should thank them for the hefty paychecks, but I cry for the clients. I'm roofer #3 for the one I worked on today. I made a few simple temp repairs with bibs and I'm going to wait until Irene passes to let the client evaluate my worth then.

I have to walk off the job some days. Even though these guys keep me very busy, I can't properly estimate the jobs, nor see where any one repair will take me from moment to moment! I go nutso/bonkers several times a day!

Buckinghams! You win! That's a zero headlap on the one held in place by the nail driven through the one to the right.

Earthquake didn't seem to bother any slate roofs. Definitely not the one I was on. We'll see how we fare when the cyclone hits.

August 24, 2011 at 1:55 p.m.

tinner666

Well, a few were broken. Other than that, what did you see. This roof HAS already been repaired by 'others'.

What we have here is a failure to communicate!. No head lap. basic rule- length subtract head lap (3inches) divide by two
