Starters on Rake For Reroof or Not

I personally hate the additional lump at the rake edge, when and if I ever do a Reroof.

Do you guys run a starter shingle up the rake edges over the original roof if you ever do a reroof, or do you just do a butt and run all the way up?

I never run anything up the rake, whether its a tear off, new construction or a second layer. I just don't do it.>>>

NOT.....Cut back old flush and install drip edge as an option. I've always thought of a soldier course or starter up the rakes as a waste of good material and $. The chalk line is just as straight as the starter. I think many installers like this meth>>>

I think the last Re-Roof we did was in 1991, until my Dad wanted to go cheap on his own roof.

I was just asking, mainly because I can't stand that hump 12" or 7" away from the rake edge if you use the starters up them, even if you cut back the old roo>>>

REDSHIRT ROOFING

We do not run a starter up the gable ends. It causes that bump and shouldn't be neccesary. We do run a rake edge metal (j-channel like) over the old overhang on the gables to hide the old layer.

What a great question. Puts the whole issue of recovers right on the line I'd say. Depends on how willing we are to close our eyes to the reality of what we are doing with recovers (...if we do them.) Aside from aesthetic issues (lumpiness) any serious>>>
