Hello I am new to this site but I was wondering if I can get some opinions on shingle installation.
how many of you guys run the shingles in racks from gutter to ridge versus the pyramid method that is suggested?
is the rack method acceptable everywhere?>>>
If your using a 2 tone shingle, you can go from the eve to the ridge, but if it's a solid color you should go @ a 45>>>
I know a roofer who was made re-do a building that was racked and color variations showed in a line straight up. He said after they redid the roof installing all shingles at a 45 degree angle the color variations showed diagonally instead of straight up was the only difference! lol>>>
Your roofs never thaw out long enough to leak!>>>
Racking is a no-no. It says so right on the IKO bungle wrappers. If IKO says it's so, then so it is written!
Seriously, I don't like the racking method. I have tons of pictures of "racing stripes" up the roof from racking. Not to mention that all of your water entry points are lining up from the eave to the peak. And...And...And...>>>
ROBERT: [ RE: shingle install method ] , Tuesday, January 27, 2009 @ 8:57 AM I am a : Roofer Have done it both ways for years see no differences in the roofs both work fine
I believe product quality has a lot to do with this. I'm like you Robert, but i have noticed that in the last few years , that 3 tabs are not holding up as good as they did 20 yrs ago. I have jobs out there that are 20 yrs old that still look ok. But i have done jobs 10 yrs ago that are not holding up, the tar lines are not holding up, and tabs are folding back and coming off.
This could have something to do with the phasing out of the 20 yr shingles. All we can get now is 25 yr in 3tabs.>>>

3-tabs or dims?
Around here 3-tabs are racked, and dims are run diagonal. Diagonal takes longer , but saves flipping the tab to 4th nail.>>>
I RUN A 45 FROM GUTTER TO RIDGE, I GENRALY HAVE TWO GUYS ON ONE SLOPE, ONE RUNNING FROM EAVE TO HALFWAY, THEN ME TAKING IT TO THE RIDGE, WE SIX NAIL ALL STRIP SHINGLES. AROUND HERE (WYOMING) IT'S WHAT EVER WORKS BEST FOR YOU.>>>
