A house I did about 5 years ago put on landmark TL shingles on new construction general contractor put on aluminium gutters. There are pin holes throughout mostly where some loose rock has gathered. Looks like rust. Had the rep come out and look he said if the mispackaged an AR shingle could cause the problem so they tested the shingle, not AR. Anyone seen this before? House is 1/4 mile from coast.>>>

TRG Certainteed tested the shingles and said they are not AR shibgles.

Robert I was wondering about that and asked Certainteed to also check for that but they said there is no problem with the shingle. Also thr roof looks fine but am persuing that with an independent test. Nice to here of that happening as it sounds like a similar problem.>>>

We had thousands of squares of atlas pinnacle shingles turn orange here, from iron in the granules. It was huge atlas had to file a claim with thier insurance to clear it up.Katrina and rita helped lots to,driveways were orange, gutters anywhere the run off ran it stained and bad to.This may or may not be similar but i do know it was something that was huge in louisiana for last 5 years>>>

I'm thinking along the lines of egg.

All our work is near the coast and in the 25 years if roofed I don't ever recall a gutter failing from electrolysis from the copper core of shingle granules. Of course pursue the defective shingle option but also look into the quality (thickness) of the aluminum gutter as well as the slope of the gutter. BTW, how old of a job is this?>>>

Any possibility that the gutter stock was inferior?>>>

GAK No chimney or any place they would have used muriatic acid, good thought though.

HOP Don't have any pics. But you can see what looks like rust spots on the bottom of the gutters and water leaks through.

I talked with an independent testing firm in Florida and the guy there said he dose testing for certainteed so could not test the shingles for me but mentioned that sometimes the ceramic that they coat the rock on the shingles to color them contains copper. If this is the case then it seems like this should be payed for by Certainteed. They refused so will be getting an independent test. If this is the case putting aluminium gutters and any comp roof on near the coast could be a problem as all the rock is made by 3M on all the shingles my supplier carries.>>>
