Hui, anybody have experience stripping asbestos shingles from large 1930s house? I expect the men to wear masks, filter, and throwaway coveralls, but have not found much info on what else is required. Neighbours concerns over dust etc. could get job shut down? located in Ontario. thanks
Yes, call your local landfill....That would be a good place to start....It's been over decade ago we did that sort of thing....Obtined some sort of license/permit I believe....Wasn'r very complicated....Things change of course, (especially w/big bro),....Used what we used to call "hudson sprayers" to keep materials damp/dust free, and double-bagged all debris....Local landfill accepted at increased fee, I believe.
Back in the day when time wasn't like it is today, I had many asbestos shingle roofs to tear off. Asbestos shingle products are with out a doubt one of the best alternatives to slates wood and far outperforms asphalt shingles. Too bad they were discontinued. If you don't bring them to a dust they are safe. The asbestos is encapsulated in the product It is not friable unless turned to dust. Bagging them in plastic is sufficient, Keep them damp there will be no danger. One of the best manufactured roofing shingles ever, An era gone by. You should call your landfill and ask them what measures you'll have to take to dump it there. Mine ended up just wanting a file filled out on where the asbestos came from and some other simple questions. It wasn't even much more per ton. I ended up encapsulating the asbestos by building a stick framed roof over it so I don't any exp. tearing it off.
