Hello, I've got a customer who called us out for a repair. It appears that his roofing tiles are made of asbestos and the type of tile is definitely not available. He's had some blow off in the wind recently and some are cracked and have corners or pieces missing.

I suggested that he file an insurance claim since some of the shingles have blown off and are cracked.

I'm trying to get prepared to meet with the insurance company. I am wondering if anyone has worked with an insurance company before regarding filing a claim for replacement on an asbestos roof?

What are they looking for as far as damage to total the roof?

Thanks!

Here is what I would do... Check with Hailwatch, and see when the last storm was. It could be that if it was over a year ago, the insurance company may try to skirt around a claim. Second, get a sample of the roofing material tested. 3rd, Send a sample to Itel Labs, they can tell you what they would consider as a reasonable replacement.

You have the abatement question, and that varies from State to State. Some are much more strict than others, and then do a full inspection to see if there are any other things to deal with (skip sheeting and such,).

Make sure if it does go to insurance that they understand that the whole roof may need replaced, because the profile may be different as far as requirements go for the product installed and code for the city... (if they have code upgrade insurance. )

I just returned from the fires in Reno NV. Asbestos roofing can be repaired. If it can't then you can price the roof with the new cement fibered tiles. One expense with the asbestos is the removal and dumping. The insurance company knows it is not friable unless sawn or dust is created with them. I worked on one that was over wood shakes. Insurance paid for the roof, and I was able to get them to pay for a company to abate the asbestos tiles. There are a few places in the US that sell the tiles, but they are hard to find.
