he Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) is the authoritative voice for liquid applied roofing and waterproofing in the UK. Founded in 1979 and relaunched in its current form in 2010, LRWA is an industry-led, professional association bringing together manufacturers, contractors, installers, distributors and technical professionals across a specialist discipline.
Our work is guided by three core principles: competence, compliance and confidence. In an industry reshaped by the Building Safety Act and heightened accountability across the construction supply chain, these principles define how we support our members and the wider sector through ongoing change.
We're pleased to let you know that we have published Version 2.2 of the LRWA Hot Melt Code of Practice, dated August 2026.
The Code sets out guidance on the selection, specification, design, installation and maintenance of Hot Melt waterproofing systems across flat roofs, podiums, terraces, balconies and walkways. If you specify, install or manufacture within this part of the sector, this is a document you'll want on file.
Why it matters to you:
This edition has been updated to reflect current standards, including BS 6229:2025 Flat roofs with continuously supported flexible waterproof coverings - Code of practice. Whether you're pricing a job, briefing a site team or fielding a query from a client, having the latest guidance to hand supports accurate specification and gives you a stronger footing if that specification is ever challenged.
The Code places particular emphasis on achieving correct falls at design and construction stage, since standing water caused by inadequate falls can impose structural loads the roof was not designed for and accelerate material deterioration. It also gives updated guidance on zero falls and absolute zero falls, applications for inverted warm roofs and blue roofs.
Substrate preparation has a significant chapter focusing on concrete curing times, peel bond testing procedures and the treatment of curing compounds that are compatible or incompatible with Hot Melt waterproofing systems. The Code also confirms Electronic Integrity Testing (EIT) as the recognised method for on-site verification of waterproofing integrity, in place of traditional flood testing.

LRWA supports the liquid roofing and waterproofing sector across four interconnected areas. Together, they form a complete framework for competence, compliance and confidence across design, supply, installation and beyond.

We develop and maintain technically robust guidance aligned with current legislation, British Standards and building regulations. Our Technical Committee and specialist Working Groups monitor regulatory change and translate it into practical, sector-specific direction for designers, contractors and manufacturers. We sit on key standards committees, respond to consultations and feed insight back to members, so those working in the field have access to reliable, current information when they need it.

We deliver the only UK training programme leading to a nationally recognised qualification across all major liquid applied roofing and waterproofing technologies.
Our Specialist Applied-skills Programme (SAP), the sector equivalent of an apprenticeship, takes trainees through structured classroom and practical learning followed by on-site assessment. On completion, candidates achieve an NVQ Level 2 in Liquid Applied Roofing and qualify for a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card. For eligible CITB levy payers, the programme is fully funded.
Experienced installers can pursue a qualification through our Onsite Assessment and Training (OSAT) route, part funded for eligible CITB levy payers.
Our online training academy provides flexible, accessible courses for professionals across the supply chain, including installers, sales teams, distributors and procurement personnel, at every stage of their career.

LRWA membership is a benchmark, built on independently verified standards that give specifiers, building owners and clients genuine assurance of quality and competence across design, supply and installation.
Manufacturer members must demonstrate independently verified product performance, audited quality management systems meeting ISO 9001, and independent product accreditations including BBA and BDA certificates. For contractors and installers, membership signals a commitment to working to recognised standards and following robust technical guidance, providing a clear and credible differentiator when demonstrating competence to clients and specifiers. For distributors, associates and affiliates, it reflects active participation in raising standards across the supply chain.
Whatever your role in the sector, LRWA membership means something. Get in touch to find out what it means for you.

LRWA is more than an association. Through the LRWA Awards, industry events, knowledge-sharing forums and charitable initiatives, we bring the sector together and support meaningful causes. We believe the legacy of our industry is defined not only by the standards we set, but by the community we build.
Whether you are a manufacturer, contractor, installer, specifier or distributor, LRWA is your professional home in the liquid roofing and waterproofing sector.
