Water Jet Services

A waterjet cutting machine is an industrial device used for the fabrication of flat-cut parts. Waterjet’s use a highly focused nozzle to shoot water and an abrasive material into a high-pressure stream. A Waterjet can be used to precision cut semi-soft materials like rubber, foam, acrylic or wood, and also cut harder materials like aluminum, brass, steel, copper, and zinc sheets, without causing heat damage.

ES-1 Perimeter Systems

ES-1 it is the first roof edge standard developed to aid architects, specifiers, and other roofing professionals in designing and installing a qualtiy metal roof edge system. From the highest wind resistance to lighter duty, our perimeter systems have you convered.

Most roof wind damage / blow off problems originate at the perimeter of the roof system. Rarely is it due to something in the middle of the roof area. This is true for “flat” roof membrane roof systems also. Most of these roof systems terminate at the perimeter with a metal edging, gravel stop, or coping.

Inadequate design and attachment of the perimeter metal is directly responsible for a high percentage of wind related problems. Because of the scope of this problem a method of testing the wind resistance of these various perimeter metal design was developed by ANSI / Spri. ( American National Standards Institute / Single Ply Roofing Industry ).

Steeple Square featured in NRCA's Professional Roofing Magazine

NRCA supported Professional Roofing.net recently published a project profile and historic summary of our award winning work on Steeple Square, Dubuque, Iowa. We've selected some highlights, included below:

In April 2018, The Durable Slate Company crew began work on Steeple Square. At 211 feet high, the steeple is one of the tallest structures in Dubuque. To work safely at this height, The Durable Slate Company workers helped design and install a scaffolding system.

The Durable Slate Company workers repaired and/or replaced deteriorated roof deck sheathing and applied Owens Corning Titanium® Synthetic Underlayment to the roof deck. To create new flat-lock copper panels, The Durable Slate Company craftsmen used 15,000 pounds of 20-ounce copper and handmade each panel with a cleat to allow for expansion and contraction.

In October 2018, The Durable Slate Company crew completed work on Steeple Square. A Dubuque icon since the 1800s, the revived Dubuque skyline landmark now serves as a beacon for affordable housing, educational training, recreational programs, celebrations and community empowerment.

For its exceptional work on Steeple Square, The Durable Slate Company received a 2020 Gold Circle Award from the Roofing Alliance in the Outstanding Workmanship category and a North American Copper in Architecture Award from the Copper Development Association. In addition, The Durable Slate Company is the first U.S. company to win a prestigious International Federation for the Roofing Trade IFD Award in the Metal Roofing category.

ACM Panel Cutting Services

ACM (aluminum composite material) Series panels are designed for use as an external wall cladding in conjunction with a proper weather resistant barrier to form a back-ventilated, rain-screen design. The cladding creates a protective layer for the building’s waterproofing membrane(s) by providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing surface. While the panels will significantly discourage the entry of surface water, some water will enter the drained and ventilated cavity behind the panels and must be repelled by the weather resistant barrier.

Aluminium sheets can be coated with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), fluoropolymer resins (FEVE), or polyester paint. Aluminium can be painted in any kind of color, and ACPs are produced in a wide range of metallic and non-metallic colors as well as patterns that imitate other materials, such as wood or marble.

The Importance of Roof Ventilation

More and more people are realizing the need to better insulate their homes to both help reduce their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Although this is generally a very necessary and good thing, improper venting can have some negative side-effects if certain basic precautions are not taken.

One of the most important of these is making sure that your roof is adequately ventilated. Failing to do this can lead to serious damage to your property which can end up with you having to shell out even more than you’re saving on your heating and cooling bill.

Preventing Dampness & the Trouble that Comes with it

Many homeowners chose to only insulate the ceilings of the top floor of their homes, rather than insulating the roof itself. This is a bad idea as it can cause significant issues with the development and presence of dampness and mold. The problem is that the air in the un-insulated roof space still receives a great deal of heat from the house, making it significantly warmer than the air outside. The inner surface of the roof, however, will be the same temperature as the outside air.

When the warmer air in the roof space comes into contact with the cold roof, moisture in the air condenses on the underside of the roof. This condensation then drips down onto the floor of the roof space where it can quickly begin to collect and penetrate your joists, insulation, and through to the ceiling below. As well as encouraging rot and the growth of mold, this can lead to damaging finishes such as plaster, paintwork, and wallpaper. It can cause insulation to degrade over time. CMS provides custom made roof vents in a variety of materials.
