A new thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane is helping contractors streamline installation while improving seam performance on low-slope roofing systems. MuleHide has introduced TPO with Seam Protector, a polyester-reinforced standard TPO membrane designed to keep lap areas clean throughout the installation process. Available in 60- and 80-mil thicknesses, the membrane features a factory-applied film on the top and bottom lap areas. That film shields seams from dirt, debris and bonding adhesive overspray, then removes easily before welding.
By eliminating the need to clean seam areas prior to welding, crews can move faster and more efficiently. Removing the Seam Protector film is up to 70% faster than cleaning seams manually. Without the added step of protecting lap areas from contamination, contractors can reallocate labor and reduce time spent on detail work that does not directly advance the installation.
The benefit goes beyond faster installation. Because the seam areas remain factory-clean until the moment of welding, contractors achieve more consistent, reliable results. Weld strength is 10% higher compared to seams exposed to dirt, and the likelihood of “cold welds” is reduced. Those cold welds can lead to leaks, open seams and long-term performance issues, so maintaining clean weld zones directly supports overall system durability.
TPO with Seam Protector can be used in fully adhered, induction-welded and mechanically attached systems. It is also suitable for flexible membrane flashings at walls, curbs and other details. Membranes are available in White, Gray and Tan, with rolls measuring 100 feet long in 10-foot and 12-foot widths.
Like other TPO membranes in the manufacturer’s lineup, the system is engineered to withstand sun, hail, rain, snow, heat, cold, building movement and exposure to airborne contaminants. By combining seam protection with familiar installation methods, the membrane offers contractors a practical way to improve quality control while accelerating production.
