Students Share Their Experience as Tremco Summer Interns

Tremco WTI Interns at Tremco
August 23, 2019 at 6:00 a.m.

By Heidi J. Ellsworth, RCS Partner

True to the culture that Tremco has built, their summer interns were immersed in projects, specs, and software with a focus on teaching them about the roofing industry.

With the labor shortage in every roofing conversation lately, Tremco and Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc (WTI) a subsidiary of Tremco Roofing, have actively worked not only on recruiting but changing the brand of roofing.  It is cool to work in roofing is the theme that you hear consistently from the leadership of Tremco.

But what is the next generation saying.  As part of an ongoing series of articles, RoofersCoffeeShop is proud to highlight a Day in the Life of Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc (WTI) interns.  These young people spent the summer interning with WTI and learned a lot about the “coolness” of roofing.  Tremco and WTI invest heavily into their internship program not only actively engaging the students in roofing projects but also giving them time to present what they learned to senior management.  It is a win-win situation for all involved.

Here is what they had to share with RCS readers after their summer in roofing.

James Liu, Hudson, Ohio, attending Fisher School of Business at The Ohio State University

As an intern at Tremco, I programmed phones/tablets and helped review material lists for programs used in the field.  . All phones and tablets had to have certain applications installed for our employees in the field so that they finished their jobs quickly, efficiently and safely. Keeping material lists up to date and accurate helps speed up the process for tracking and report materials in the field.   On top of all of this, I was given the opportunity to participate in training our field team on technology tools  in Albany, New York along with being allowed to take part in OSHA training so that I could walk away from this summer being OSHA certified. The intern program also provided many activities that were engaging and educational such as the meeting with the Group President, volunteering at the Salvation Army and learning to be financially independent from financial advisers.

Carley Gross, Mantua, Ohio, attending Kent State University for Construction Management

This summer at WTI I worked as a construction intern in the specification writing department. I worked on specs, AutoCAD Drawings, and also got to work with a construction manager. I was able to travel to jobsites and participate in pre-bid meetings. During my internship, I gained lots of knowledge about roofing systems. I was able to learn about different roofing products and the variation of roofing systems that are used in different parts of the country. My time here was very valuable and I enjoyed meeting and learning from roofing professionals, as well as being able to meet and become friends with other interns from all different departments.

Ryan Jeskie, Amherst, Ohio, Bowling Green State University

During my time as an intern at Tremco, I was given the task of editing and filming videos for the company and assisting in video production. I began editing tutorial videos before I began assisting in production and filming on my own. I was taught how to use Adobe Premiere Pro in order to edit my videos together. I had also attended intern events such as the trip to the Pinstripes Bowling Alley, the Tremco plants in Ashland and Cleveland, and the internship seminars where we spoke to professional employees who work for the company. Working for Tremco has provided me with a firsthand experience of working in a professional environment and has helped me improve my skills as a video editor.

Madeline Milano, Aurora, Ohio, attending Miami University

This has been my second successful summer as an intern at Tremco. As an intern you are able to learn the specific skills needed to help your manager, while simultaneously learning skills that help you thrive as a worker through the actual intern program. Working with my manager, I learned a great deal about product compliance, specifically regarding the LEED v4 credits, and the living building challenge. The experience here is like no other, interns are entrusted with responsibilities comparable to the responsibilities of an experience employee.  The immersion into the Tremco culture helps us to see ourselves as an important and respected part of the company and makes the internship so worthwhile. The intern program is the perfect balance of education and fun, our activities include volunteering, learning from Tremco managers, and hanging out at Pinstripes Bowling! I have learned so much this summer in terms of leadership and communication, while making great friendships that make me want to come back next summer. Thank you Tremco!
