Question about roll roofing

MyOldRoofNeverDidThis

Hey guys, today I was asked to give a quote on a friend-of-a-friends garage flat roof.

He has it Tarped right now, and underneath is the old school cold applied roll roofing. It is leaking like crazy and I am going to need to replace about five sheets of plywood. This guy is only interested in getting a cheap priced roof, he doesn't want rubber, he wants the same type of roof  ...

What are your opinions on the old style roll roofing such as GAF mineral guard? I almost feel guilty putting this on his roof since it just seems so cheap and messy.. Are any of you guys fans of the stuff? I have done a few roofs with the certaintieed self-adhered roll roofing and in my opinion that is a far superior product, but obviously it comes at a much increased cost.

Can I get some advice? Is the cheaper stuff "good enough" as he is saying, or should I tell him that the only way I will do it is if he gets the self adhered?

Thanks for any and all advice.

OLE Willie

I wouldn't put 90# rolled roofing on a dog house anymore!

Put a good base sheet first and use half lap installed with trowel grade tar

He's in it for a tarp, 5 sheets of plywood, and your labor. I assume you charge for it, possibly good money who knows.

We decided a long time ago that if they are willing to pay the price of us getting out of bed, they should at least do themselves a favor and spend some money wisely on materials.

Ok, Ill fess up to something I did earlier this year. We had put a nice roof on this house a few years back. His sheds 90# roof blew off this spring and he has been putting off moving his stuff to another shed and tear this one down. I ran 3' nailed base around the perimeter, primed drip edge, and then rolled out GAF Liberty directly to the deck. Cheaper than running the base and shouldn't be a problem for 7-10 years.

edit: Even if you install it to amazing standards, it will still be crap and might make you look bad. Half lap would be the only it won't be absolute junk, but then your your talking time & more material.
