I have two claims right now that have asbestos over shake with skip decking. Where I come from that is not a nailable surface for a repair. Can anyone show me something in writing on this?

man i just installed gutters on a home that has a perfectly good cedar shake roof on it. (well it was installed by bahamians but good enough by nassau standards) and this flippn contractor or some type of middle man ( i had to pay him to get the job) goes up in the attic and complains he sees daylight. so he instructs the homeowner to get a new roof so they can put plywood and grace under it and put cedar shingles instead of shakes. the current roof is on 1x4s. anyway this country is full of wood shingle roofs. the old ones were on strips but the new ones are new testament style (saved by grace). however just like unsound doctrine, the new testament roofs have all sorts of cupping, curling, molding and failure going on. the roofs on strips, like sound doctrine, are doing very well. i priced the job for him and it's 50k for the shingles, 20k for the plywood, 15k for the grace and 20k for the breather. he wants to pay a total of less than 100k. i could probably do a proper job for close to that but add in nails and flashing and i can't even buy the materials for that. he wants to rip off a perfectly good roof and replace it with a proven failure just to keep up with the ignorant! it reminded me so much of the US that i finished my gutters and told him to lose my phone number. i wouldn't do such nonsense for 200k. what a tragedy, i thought i escaped that bs. at least he's not the majority here. anyway just sold two big walaba shingle jobs. they're using plywood and grace but they're letting me put 2x2s and 1x4s on it. thye get their prenuptual agreement and i still get to install a sound roof! win/win i guess. anyway breather is 200 a square and the wood is just over 300 with labor and fastners. a no brainer really.

couldn't agree with tinner more. with today's plywood and ice and water as a standard deck in the south, i install strips over that mess in an attempt to ensure my roofs are installed properly. this was the result of passing up work for several years because i refused to install a proper roof on plywood. i can't stop or change em so i just build over em!

rogpayx22 Said: How can you insure that your going to hit solid decking with skip decking and a with asbestos tiles a preset nail location?

I just look where I'm getting ready to drive my hole. Board= 'Go'. Gap= 'No-go', Need to drill an extra hole. No biggie.

I have wondered this myself. They should consider themselves lucky they don't have to put on a system that would last as long as the asbestos did.

I've been meaning to post about a similar issue. We tore off a 3-tab roof that had 1.5 - 2" between planks. Naturally, we re-redecked it. Insurance wouldn't pay for it and the guy isn't paying me for the decking. I found out that he is cheating on his wife, so I'm sure every dollar he gets is going to getting drunk w/ new GF. Yes it's a small town haha.

It's a fine surface for tile, slate, asbestos, shake, etc. You put the nails, or in the case of hard material, the holes for nails, then the nails, at the nailable surface. Not the space. :)
