There is a house on the left as soon as I get in to town, which I pass most every day, sometimes many times. I put a bid on this particular roof about 4 years. Didn't invest much time, didn't talk to homeowner, didn't care that I didn't get it because I was 5 months deep.
This particular house is a 12/12. Every day I notice, or how could I NOT notice the 14" wind turbine installed with the default setting. Yes it sticks out like a sore thumb at a 45 degree angle.
Most days I'll get a kick out of seeing it for obvious reasons. Makes me feel good. But some days it triggers the negative side. If it were my roof, every drop of rain passing near the turbine would appear on the kitchen ceiling. Reminds me of the pricing scheme I'm forced to bow down to.
On another note somewhat related: Whew it was hot and humid one today! Somebody smack me next time I say I think it might be an early day. I still enjoyed it.
haha, exactly. My wife is always telling me to stop looking at roofs and drive.
When customer's say "who really notices roofs anyways" while picking out color, my face goes
seen-it-all: Pretty sad when we are looking at roofs and everyone is looking at the hot babes.
For some reason I do both, but it doesn't do me any good to do either!
This brings to mind a time back in the day when things weren't like they are today. The very Lovely Mrs. Ciak and I were working in the ship building business. Bath Iron Works assembling large Roll On Roll Off Container ships, Missile Frigates, Oil Tankers etc. Welding for as long as we did, became very expert at the process. Our lives were wrapped around welding. Every weld we saw or touched would be critiqued, examined and judge. It was crazy interesting and fun. Becoming a roofing professional after going through all the certifications for 1st class pipe welding and Nuclear welding for General Electric Nuclear Division was a huge change. What didn't change was the critique, interest and judge..I find roofing styles and material as. Interesting. I suspect this issue is one reason we gather here. I don't get upset anymore when someone does a job I thought should be mine. B) :) :) B) Deep Down In Florida Where The Sun Shines Damn Near Every Day
You're right there as I have almost had a few re-enders over the years gawking. Pretty sad when we are looking at roofs and everyone is looking at the hot babes. :woohoo:
I had to give up looking at all those roofs because I'm getting older and need to be paying attention to my driving!
I can relate to what you are saying. I have a few houses around the city that I pass by often and had bid and lost to another company (or should I say side job Bob) and everytime I pass by I look at the crooked ridgecapping or the rusty chimney flashings flapping in the wind and think "I hope it leaks you cheap SOB". Maybe I need counselling as some of these jobs were done 15 years ago.
I also have done a few jobs in prominent locations that everytime I pass I get a smug little smile on my face thinking "Boy that roof looks good". One job in particular that I pass by all the time was a heritage home on a busy corner lot that had a sun porch along one side of the house that had over 100 small 6"x6" panes of glass in it and two huge Monkey pod trees in the yard. The house had a 10/12 pitch roof that had old cedar shingles and the diamond shape asphalt shingles over them. I passed by that house for years always thinking "I want to roof that place some day"
Well one day I got the call and the owner wanted the best of everything. He requested 5/8" fir plywood over the wood strapping and 40 year warranty Pewter Grey laminates. That was done about 8 years ago and still looks like new today. It is one of those brag about jobs when I pass by.
