Picked up a print today. It calls for a Green roof. EPDM over tapered insulation with a grid system for growing grass. The grids are 2ft. X 2ft. placed over a protective mat over the rubber. Anybody ever do one of these? Any idea of the work involved in installing this system. The roof part I'M good with but I never did one of these systems.
Bob, you are not too far from me. Your companies website makes me believe you guys are serious players. However, I have this feeling like you might not like me. You never answered my reply on another forum. Really hurt my feelings big guy!
I am working in Jewett Roofing Company, it focuses on Green Solutions through Cool Roof systems, energy studies, recycling of old roofing and insulation systems, garden roofs, skylights, and photovoltaic systems. I hope you will find our website and services beneficial for you. For more info visit http://www.jewettroofing.com/whatWeDo_04_greenRoofing.html
Coppersmith if you need any addition info please let me know, I have access to a ton of green roof related information, including many lessons learned through screw ups.
Pnunes Thanks for the info. and welcome aboard. Don't be a stranger. I will be talking to the builder this week. about these questions.
Thank you wywoody
I was surfing the web looking for material to create a roofers manual for field operations and stumbled across this very interesting web site.
I have been involved in hundred of thousands of square feet of green roofing, my advise to you is to call the supplier of the print and find out these specific details. Has the deck been engineered to handle the weight? (request the engineers drawing and a document stating the weights per square foot) Can they change the spec from EPDM with tapered to hot rubber or a modified membrane fully adhered to the deck? Who holds the warranty for the plants? What type of plans and where were they grown? Who is maintaining the plants? (normally the provider of the system is responsible for the plants for at least two years).
Old School said: Very funny Willie. I guess that is "green" technology down south eh! Actually no. Green technology around here is growing stuff in the gutters and letting the algae spread everywhere on the roof. lol
Modular green roofs tend to be very expensive and with tapered insulation covered with EPDM, I would be very, very worried about the weight factor. I hope it's a reinforced EPDM over a high density ISO with something like Densdeck as a cover board. Personally, I think a fully adhered to deck design is far superior. Make sure your vegetation is locally grown and watch out for the maintenance terms (such as any requirement for irrigation, plant loss, etc.) that go with any warranty. Good luck!
Looks kind of fun to do. I'll have to check out the specs. to see what all is involved. I know there will be some flag stone areas.
I came across a green roof just yesterday. It had a leak around a vent that was no longer in use so i ordered two bundles of empire green blend shinlges and some plywood and took out the vent. lol
Got one planned for the spring. Already have the base on the roof. TPO single ply. Using the LiveRoof system.
Rough estimate at $25 per sq. ft.
