This course provides code officials with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding roof and wall penetrations within the building envelope. Participants will explore the historical context of penetration practices, evaluating how past and current approaches align—or conflict—with today’s codes and standards. Key areas of focus include the codes that govern penetrations for electrical and mechanical systems, as well as window and door openings. The course will also cover critical regulations for storm shelter construction, specifically ICC-500-2020, along with air permeability, insulation, and solar reflectance requirements outlined in the 2018 and 2021 IECC.
