Building Enclosure Commissioning vs. Enclosure Testing
As building performance expectations rise, confusion often remains between Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) and Building Enclosure Testing (BET). While distinct, the two intersect throughout design and construction. This session explains how testing requirements should flow from the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR) through design, construction, and final performance verification. Attendees will learn how current standards, including ASTM E2813 and ASHRAE Standard 202, define the modern BECx process; how to establish clear testing roles and responsibilities; and how common ASTM and AAMA testing protocols fit within commissioning. Real-world examples will provide a practical framework for integrating BECx and BET to deliver durable, efficient, high-performing building enclosures.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn the differences between BE Commissioning and BE Testing.
- Understand how Owner Project Requirements relate to design decisions affecting function performance testing of the Enclosure
- Develop a common basis for discussing Building Enclosure testing methods with the AEC Team.
- Understand how the Building Enclosure Commissioning process incorporate Enclosure Testing as the final Functional Performance Test of the various Enclosure Systems.
