Looking for a New Role in Roofing?

WTI New Role in Roofing
March 9, 2020 at 6:00 a.m.

By Karen L. Edwards, RCS Editor.

Consider becoming a Safety Service Rep at Weatherproofing Technologies, Inc. (WTI).

Maureen Greeves, Strategic Project Manager at Tremco/WTI recently sat down with Joshua Bonardi and Oscar Coronado-Huerta to learn more about their roles as Safety Service Reps (SSR) with WTI. Joshua shared with Maureen that before coming to WTI, he worked for a roofing contractor as the project manager where he managed the material, safety and overall project during the installations. Having this experience made the move into the SSR role with WTI an easy transition.  He had become well versed in OSHA 1926 and 1910 and enjoyed the chance to help his customers get a better understanding of how they could tackle rooftop safety.

Oscar worked as a WTI Field Tech for two years and was planning to move into a Foreman role, when he was offered a chance to become a Safety Service Representative. Prior to working for Tremco/WTI Oscar was a Foreman for 10 years with another Commercial Roofing Company.

If someone is considering a job in safety, Joshua shared this advice with Maureen, “There are 6 or 7 standard formulas for rooftop safety that are really the foundation of most recommendations. [You need to] ID all the fall hazards and know the OSHA compliant methods of fall protection, then figure out how to marry the two." That is how you provide the best solution.

Maureen asked Joshua and Oscar to share what a typical day is like as an SSR for WTI. After receiving notification from a Tremco Sales Representative that a customer is interested in a safety assessment, Joshua will meet with them to learn their goals and assess their needs. He will do a roof walk with the customer to determine how much time is spent on the roof, where most of the work is performed and to review and identify fall hazards with the customer.

Joshua takes the information from the meeting and develops a recommendation for the customer to bring the roof into compliance. His knowledge of OSHA 1910 allows him to provide several options for the rooftop safety recommendation. He gave Maureen an example, saying “If there is a piece of equipment 6 foot from an unprotected edge there are two options: 1) install a guardrail system or 2) install an anchor point for tie off."

He and the sales rep then meet with the customer to go over the proposal. In these meetings Joshua is acting as the technical resource for the Tremco Sales Representative.

Oscar said that he starts his days dealing with phone calls and emails. He travels quite a bit for his role, assisting and supporting Tremco Sales Reps in the same capacity that Joshua does. Oscar is the safety subject matter expert during evaluations and presentations to customers.

Joshua shares with Maureen that the part of his job he loves the most is "the education part of the job, 90% of customers have no idea where to start. Being able to be a valuable resource to help the customer walk through all the options and make it easier." Joshua said that he is a self-proclaimed "easy button" when it comes to providing rooftop safety solutions for customers.  Oscar says that what he like most about his job is “traveling, working outdoors and working from home.”

Joshua also shared that he appreciates the professional atmosphere and the fact the "WTI is only interested in doing the right thing." He appreciates the focus on providing value to the customer. Oscar agrees that WTI is a really good place with a lot of opportunities. “There is really no stopping, you keep learning and keep moving!” he said.

When Joshua is not working on providing fall protection solutions to his customers, he is working on fall protection hazards in his home - chasing around his 20-month-old son James! Sounds like Joshua is never really done working!

When Oscar is not working you can find him racing his 2011 SS Camaro on the ¼-mile track.  His racing team is always looking for ways to keep moving forward faster than anyone else.  Sounds a like how Oscar approaches his role with Tremco/WTI. In the winter when he is not working, he is hibernating in his house playing computer video games.

If this sounds like a career for you WTI is looking to fill a position in California and the Central US
