Growing with gutters

Growing with gutters
August 3, 2025 at 3:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Retain customers and grow your margins by adding gutters to your offerings.

In a new MetalTalk, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Tim MacVeigh who works for SRS Building Products to talk about how contractors can expand their offerings to boost their revenue. Tim has been a part of the building products distribution business for almost four decades now and has worked on all parts of the building envelope. He shared, “Whether it was shingles, windows, siding, I’ve done a lot of different things. And then about 12 years ago, we got really into the gutter business and began to see where that had just a tremendous opportunity.”

What makes gutters such a good opportunity for roofing contractors? They are an easy way to add value with high margins that keep you safe. Tim explained, “If you're doing roofing and you're not doing gutters, I would be shocked. When you put on a roof, you're going to put on drip edge. You're going to put on fascia, the rake edge, whatever you're going to do, your crew is already up there. Gutters just go right along with that.”

By expanding your offerings to include more of the building envelope, gutters specifically, contractors can make themselves a one-stop shop for their clients. This not only adds convenience for your clients, but it can help retain business for contractors. Instead of having one-time customers for a reroof job, contractors that offer gutters, windows, siding or something else can create a long-term customer. Tim elaborated, “You’re going beyond just selling a roof or a siding job, now it's consultative. You're offering choices when it comes to matching the colors and coordinating between things like the soffit, the roof and the gutter.”
