KARNAK Reflective Coatings, Sealants and Cements
KARNAK manufactures and supplies reflective coatings, cement, and sealants for roofing and waterproofing. It provides roofing products, damp-proofing and waterproofing products, fabrics and repair tapes, caulks, sealant and flooring products, and elastomeric products. The company serves architects, specifiers, contractors, distributors and building owners in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. It markets and sells its products through sales representatives in the United States and internationally. The company was founded in 1932 and is based in Clark, New Jersey.
Which emergency sealant Is right for the job?
When an emergency roof repair can’t wait for ideal conditions, choosing the right sealant is critical. KARNAK’s 671 Karna-Seal and 502MS Karna-Flex are both designed to tackle roofing repairs, but their different formulations and performance characteristics make each better suited for specific applications and environments.
Choose 671 Karna-Seal When:
- Low odor is a priority: 671 is a low-VOC, low-odor silicone sealant, making it the preferred choice for sensitive environments such as hospitals where solvent fumes from other products can be a concern.
- You need silicone compatibility: 671 is designed for repairs on roofs previously coated with silicone and is intended to be recoated only with 670HS Karna-Sil Ultra silicone coating.
- Flexibility and weather resistance matter: Its silicone formulation provides excellent flexibility, UV resistance and resistance to weathering, hardening, chalking and cracking.
- Ponding water is a concern: 671 resists permanent ponding water and can be left exposed after application.
- You need a quick weather-ready repair: 671 is rain safe in one hour.
Choose 502MS Karna-Flex When:
- You need to repair wet or dry surfaces: 502MS can adhere to both wet and dry surfaces, making it useful when conditions aren't ideal for a repair.
- Cold temperatures are a concern: 502MS offers low-temperature flexibility down to -40°F and can be applied in cold temperatures.
- You're working across different roof systems: It can be used for repairs on properly prepared single-ply, PVC, TPO, metal, concrete, SPF, plywood, asphalt, BUR and modified bitumen roofs.
- You need to address a variety of roof details: 502MS can be used for cracks, seams, flashings, fasteners, gutters, skylights, penetrations and other roof details.
- You can properly manage solvent fumes: 502MS contains solvents, so adequate precautions and ventilation are important during application.
The Bottom Line
Both products can be valuable tools for emergency roofing repairs, but the right product depends on the roof, the repair conditions and the environment. If low odor and silicone compatibility are priorities, 671 Karna-Seal may be the better choice. If you need a versatile sealant that can adhere to wet surfaces and perform in cold temperatures, 502MS Karna-Flex may be the solution.
