Why Your Company's Culture Means Everything

RCS Influencers from SA Roofing say that your company's culture has a direct impact on how you recruit and retain employees.

Your company culture is everything in today’s world. Whether you purposely work on your culture or just let it be, you have a culture. Your culture directly impacts how you recruit and retain employees. Recruiting and retaining employees starts as early as your job posting and continues through your hiring and onboarding process. Yes, that is correct, retaining your employees starts during your recruitment process. The description and message you put in your job posting not only acts as a recruitment function, but also to set the stage for what kind of employee will apply. Finding the ones that fit in your company and weeding out those who won’t before they even apply will help with your retention rates. Those who fit your company's values and culture will stick around longer than the ones who don't. Remember to take your time when hiring to focus on a good culture fit.

When designing a job posting, keep these things in mind:

  • Do you talk about your company's fun personal benefits? Ie. office holiday events, company parties, sales retreats and other outings or fun things you do throughout the year.
  • Do you talk about the heart behind the company? Do you address who the owners are at a personal level and why they are in business?
  • Make sure to include your company’s mission statement, vision statement and core values.
  • Describe the attitude an ideal candidate would have when coming to work for you.

Another aspect that can affect your retention is how you onboard people. Starting the first day and setting the stage going forward will impact how they integrate into the company. You want them to feel your company culture immediately upon interacting with your company.

To add a personal touch during the onboarding phase, you can do these things:

  • Introduce them to each person around the office. Let them take a moment to make a personal connection.
  • Prepare an onboarding video about the company and what to expect. You can have current employees talk about their experience.
  • Take them to lunch on their first day. If they are a field worker, try bringing lunch to the whole crew and allow some time for bonding.
  • Provide a company calendar for the current year in their new hire packet. This should include holidays and closures, as well as, events, anniversaries, department retreats, etc.
  • Have a welcoming swag bag. By including some fun company branded items on the first day of work you will help them feel like they are a part of the team more quickly. Items like cups, pens, shirts, hats or other swag you have around the office, are a great place to start.

Future employees begin to see your company culture from the moment they read a job posting. Take your time, be intentional, and focus on what makes your company special. This will help set the stage for your future retention and recruitment needs. An environment built with a strong culture will be the glue that keeps everyone together and thriving.
