Culture is Key in Hiring and Retention

RCS Influencer Mike Pickel says that culture is one of the most important factors in attracting and keeping the right team members.

At Texas Traditions Roofing, we started our company with a commitment to good, old-fashioned values. We treat others as we wish to be treated, and we believe in giving back to the community.

We share our Core Values with potential team members, and we proudly display them on the wall in our office to remind ourselves of their importance in all that we do. Those Core Values are:

  • Put God first, family second.

  • Be brutally honest and accountable to each other.

  • Treat everyone with humility and respect.

  • Vastly exceed expectations.

  • Be the roofing expert.

Because we have clearly defined these values, we have created a culture in our business where we always want to do the right thing – not just for our customers but also for our coworkers and teammates. The result is that people are happy in the work environment that we have created. They feel cared about, listened to, respected and most of all, they feel like they are part of the family.

We were fortunate that we started our business with these values established ahead of time. It has truly contributed to our success and to the happiness of our team members.

If you are looking to change the culture within your business, it needs to start at the top. The owners and managers have to be committed to identifying values and then upholding them and living them every day. Change doesn’t happen overnight but with time, patience and a little practice, you will see a shift begin to happen.

When your business has the right culture, you’ll see happier team members and you’ll find it easier to recruit as word-of-mouth spreads that this is a great company to work for.

Mike Pickel is the co-founder of Texas Traditions Roofing. See his full bio here.
