What's really holding roofing companies back?

JobNimbus - What
October 11, 2026 at 1:00 p.m.

By Emma Richardson.

Growth isn't always the challenge. Creating repeatable systems may be the key to scaling successfully.

Contractors often assume the next stage of success requires more sales, more territory or more leads. According to leaders from JobNimbus, many roofing companies are facing a different challenge entirely: building repeatable processes that can support sustainable growth.

On a recent episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, Karen Edwards sat down with Deni Blair and Bryan Oram of JobNimbus to discuss the obstacles that prevent roofing contractors from reaching the next level.

Bryan believes many companies mistakenly view growth as the primary issue. “They think, ‘If I could just be doing two more million in sales…’ But I don't think that most contractors have a growth problem. They have a repeatability problem in their business,” he said.

According to Bryan, many successful companies are built around the knowledge and experience of the owner. While that expertise helps launch a business, it can become a limitation when trying to scale operations across additional crews, offices or markets. He went on to explain, “The plateau isn't necessarily a wall. It's more a mirror of themselves. And it's the point where the business finally reflects back how it actually was built and how it can create repeatability.”

Bryan explained that contractors need to understand the numbers driving their businesses. That means establishing measurable goals, tracking performance and maintaining visibility into profitability. Just as importantly, they need to create processes that other team members can follow consistently.

He also noted that growth alone does not necessarily create a strong company. Roofing businesses can increase revenue while reducing profitability if additional overhead outpaces operational efficiency. Instead, long-term success depends on understanding metrics such as margins, profitability and performance indicators throughout the company.

For contractors evaluating the future of their businesses, the lesson is simple: expertise remains critical, but systems create scale. When repeatable processes replace tribal knowledge, companies can better serve customers, support employees and build lasting value.

In support of this, JobNimbus hosts an annual summit, JNSS, where users can get support from each other and the JobNimbus team. The event is designed to be an antithesis to the standard trade show setting. Rather than being held in a convention center, JNSS is at a resort in Cabo with many sessions being held pool side. The relaxed environment leads to deeper connections and more memorable conversations.

JNSS also facilitates individualized, focused time with the JobNimbus team to make sure clients are using their accounts to their fullest potential. “You have one-on-one time with account reps that can just genuinely zero in and focus on everything that you're wanting your account to do,” said Deni.

Ultimately, successful business scaling requires unpacking processes and dissecting their function. Getting involved with peers and experts during this process provides a valuable sounding board for new ideas.
