Tradition and technology: How roofing contractors can win for the long haul

Ashley and Seth Pietsch - Balancing tradition and technology
December 11, 2025 at 7:30 a.m.

RCS Influencers Ashely and Seth Pietsch say you don’t have to choose between “old school” and “new school” methods.

Roofing has always been a craft built on skill, trust and good old-fashioned hard work. Long before drones buzzed overhead or apps tracked every project detail, contractors earned success the classic way — doing solid work and standing by their reputation. Those roots still matter today, maybe more than ever. But the contractors who are thriving long-term are the ones blending those tried-and-true practices with smart, modern tools.

The good news? You don’t have to choose between “old school” and “new school.” The real magic happens when the two work together.

Take customer relationships. Homeowners still want to know that the person on their roof is experienced, dependable and communicative. Technology just gives you more ways to show it. Faster estimates, smoother scheduling, project updates, photos and paperwork handled digitally — it all adds up to a better customer experience without losing the personal touch.

Operationally, the right tech doesn’t replace your instincts or leadership — it frees you up to use them. Digital job files, CRM systems, cloud-based tools, drone measurements and safety apps can help your team stay organized and reduce mistakes. And honestly, reducing paperwork alone feels like a win.

From the insurance side, we at Integrity Insurance & Bonding Inc see this balance play out every day. Contractors who pair their strong traditional values with efficient tech tend to have cleaner documentation, safer jobsites and fewer disputes. That translates to fewer claims and — surprise, surprise — better long-term insurance options and pricing. Technology doesn’t eliminate risk, but it absolutely helps manage it.

Still, there’s no need to chase every shiny new gadget. The goal isn’t to turn your roofing company into a tech startup — it’s to choose tools that support your strengths. Ask yourself: Does this improve communication? Safety? Accuracy? Documentation? If the answer’s yes, you’re probably on the right track.

At the end of the day, roofing will always be a hands-on trade powered by skill, hustle and integrity. Technology just helps amplify those qualities. When contractors blend tradition with innovation thoughtfully, they put themselves in the best position to grow, stay competitive and build a business that lasts.

The future of roofing isn’t about picking sides — it’s about letting the old and the new work together to elevate your business and strengthen the reputation you’ve worked so hard to build.

Ashley Pietsch is the vice president and Seth Pietsch is the president of Integrity Insurance & Bonding Inc. Read their full bios here.
